View Full Version : Air Conditioning Issue

The other day my air con system stopped blowing cold air, today I had the system cleaned and refilled by a national tyre supplier but the system still will not cool the air. The main issue is that I am taking the family on holiday this friday in the car and my wife already dislikes the A6 (thinks I should get something smaller and more economical).

I have checked the air con fuses on both sides of the cabin but neither of them have blown.

What else can be checked?? Probably not enough time to get it booked in to be looked at before the holiday.

Any advice gratefully received

Need to get the car scanned; probably the air con pressure sensor fitted on the ac pipe in the engine bay.

I phoned up the Audi dealer in Aberdeen and they cannot even look at the car until mid next month. Does anyone know any decent dealers near Hathersage in Derybshire?

If you think the tyre dealer did a good job and fully repressurised the system then take it back to them to re-check it. If the pressure has dropped off again then the car has de-gassed, meaning a leak. the most likely place is the front condenser, which is vulnerable to stone damage.

How old is your car? My last car went ten years without a re-gas and was still blowing ice-cold air when I sold it. If you need a re-gas on a relatively new car then there is likely to be a leak somewhere.

An independent aircon specialist will be able to do a leak test (they put in a visible dye so you can see where the leak is), fix the leak and re-pressurise the system. I would imagine that they can also interrogate the car for fault codes, too, nowadays?

So the tyre dealer made a comment very early in the process that the amount of fluid recovered from the system was the same amount as the system had installed when new, so there was no leak. They cleaned and repressurised the system but did not believe that the fault would be rectified.

I have since spoken to a vehicle aircon specialist in Huntly who says from his knowledge of Audis the pressure sensor is normally the culprit. e keeps A3 and A4 pressure sensors in his van, so he has suggested that I pop over and see him one evening after work and he will swap the pressure sensor out (he is ordering the pressure sensor from the Audi dealer, he has my reg number and other details). If this works then great, if not I am in the same position as now.

So if the pressure sensor is changed out, does this have to be linked to the computer system to make it aware a pressure sensor has been swapped? He does not have the capability to read VAG codes. If it does then I will have no other option but to take it to an Audi dealer.

Thanks

Only as a fault clear as far as I am aware. The ECU's are smart enough to resume function generally once a new normal sensor (like a pressure transducer or NTC resistor etc) is reconnected. This will leave the old fault code/or the code from where the old sensor has been disconnected.

Modules often need re-adapting.

Replacing a faulty sensor will allow the system to work without the need to clear codes etc. The fault code will stay in the system for a certain amount of time before clearing itself

So it didn't actually need to be regassed? Did they charge you?

Ask as many places don't if it doesn't need doing.

They gave me a refund.

So it was the pressure sensor next to the radiator. Mechanic swapped it last night at 9pm as I was going on holiday on Friday. Now I have cold air! Only charged £72 which included the new Audi sensor.
