Changed both of these today on wifes 3.0tdi quattro, my advice is dont!
Space really is at a premium and I was determined not to strip the front down for access., some paces under 2 inches maybe less.
Old broom handle is needed to get the belt back on the pulleys, physically impossible to get hands or arms down there even skinny ones.
HPFP belt is an **** to get on and off even though access is a doddle, the plastic back cover has no give in it at all.
Serpentine belt had a couple of very minor cracks and the HPFP belt was showing signs of wear and cover was full of very fine brown dust inside from the belt, neither were critical but a good bit of preventative maintainance.

That's not just the EGR, that is oil in the intercooler system mixing with the soot of the EGR system. Crack one of the bottom intercooler pipes off you will be amassed how much oil pores out!

When I replaced my serpentine belt, I put the front-end into the service position. I then changed the water pump, stat and tensioner. However I wish I also changed the main crank pulley as these are know failures. Mine failed a week after doing the job.

After owning a few mercs I always take a good long hard look at the crank damper rubber!

Any closed crankcase ventilation system is going to have oil in the inlet pipework.

If it was mine I would have pulled the whole lot to pieces cleaned it up, got it remapped and egr system shut down. but its wifes motor and I have had the belts for over 4 months waiting to go on, vor is just not an option as it means she will have my disco and I get to drive the 1959 land rover!

I have to ask what is the service position and whats involved in getting it there?
