Hello.
Just was looking fr the service and came across to that offer: http://www.halfordsautocentres.com/car-servicing?gad=CJvMia8DEgi3qw_Mxj7hQhjt0Zf9AyDLm4Yn&_$ja=tsid:55795%7ccgn:126008%7ckw:http%253A%252F%2 52Fwww%252Ewhatsmyservicecost%252Eco%252Euk%252F&awc=1397_1434274702_2c8d503a9977d9c9047b7a38a55f57 f0
Would you recommend halfords or no? I was thinking about Interim service of course.
One, more. Should I opt for a long life service of every 10k one?
I do around 1200 a month so far.
Car is 108k 1.9tdi 130 B6 A4.
Any ideas suggestions?

It simply isn't possible to do the job properly for £70, the parts cost more than that.

Yeah they do advertise it as from £79, but even if it is £130, is Halfords any good after all?

Just get a pela pump from eBay suck the oil out the dipstick and filter housing everything else is at the top of engine you don't need to lift the car all you will need is a oil filter tool to change the filter

1200 miles a month means you need to be on fixed service 10k or 12 months. Forget halfords IMO as OP suggested DIY or a good indie. (The indie will have mad hair, ex RAF boiler suits and smoke very thin roll ups but he's your man)

OK, guilty on the hair front but my boiler suits are brand new (in RAF blue...) and I gave up smoking years ago and never did roll up's!

LOL. Seriously those RAF boiler suits must be made out of canvas or tarpaulin type material, you couldn't wear them out.. I used to buy them in the old army and navy surplus stores for a couple of quid. No comment on hair but then us baldies seldom comment on hair. A 1 man show indie has long grey hair he pulls through the hole he burned in his cap!

What, looking like he did before he died or after 11 years six foot under? The latter is how I feel this morning....:alcoholic:puke:

I was hoping Crasher had a waxed moustache as he was an aspiring RAF pilot in his youth. I only stopped waxing when I turned 50!

Are those places franchises or part of Halfords? That's a terrible way to run a garage

Getting a bit off the OP, but i did put one of my cars into a 'National Autocentre' or whatever it was next to a Halfords several years ago for MOT as it was close to where i worked. It had just been service (by me) and was tip top, came down after work to pick it up and was told it needed a litre of oil adding which would be 10 quid or thereabouts, I said i don't think so - I just serviced it and know exactly how much oil is in it and it didn't need a litre adding. Some shuffling of papers under the desk and mumbled apology, me out the door with MOT in hand.
You gets what you pay for !!

When you get down to the basics or why these things happen it is the result of the consumer thinking they want the best deal but what they really mean is as cheap as possible and that is what these places cater for. If someone advertises a service and MOT from £79 as I saw in one window last night, that place should be avoided like the plague because the owners aren't fools, they would not give you the droppings from their noses unless you paid for it so what you are getting is a sub standard splash and dash and if you expect that to suffice, more the fool you. We do need some sort of accountable trade body that covers the industry but that won't stop the problems as even if you make registration a legal requirement, you will still get someone who is prepared to fly under the radar and work on their or others driveways and you will always have some idiot who is happy to accept this because it's "a good deal for cash" but then whinge like crazy when the work is not up to an acceptable standard. Over the years I have found it is those who pay the least for something who whinge the most when it's not right.

Going back in time to when these Halfords branches were owned by another company, this is how a car came to me directly out of there as the brake pedal was sinking after they fitted a new caliper and brake pipe to a Golf 4

The parts they had used were all genuine VW but when I looked at the invoice, they had charged DOUBLE the retail for each part!
