View Full Version : No Power When Below 4000 Revs

Hello fellow Audi drivers!
I have recently bought a 1996 A4, 1.8 Petrol engine. It is in great shape despite its age, and was a steal at £200!
However, it has very little power until it hits four and a half thousand RPM, at which point it shoots off like a rocket. It is most noticeable when going uphill, and there is a LOT of hills in my area!
I quite often have to drop 2 or sometimes 3 gears just to get the revs above 4000, but then it will beast up the hill like its nothing, right up to the speed i was originally doing, and then stay there happily. however, if it stays below 4.5 RPM, it will have its power for a few seconds, then loses it again like something switching off.
It is the same when cruising, I have to full-throttle it just to get it to set off, until I get the revs up and it shoots off, and I have to redline it to get up to speed. once I reach my desired speed, I can stick it in 5TH and quite happily sit at 2-3 RPM with no too much throttle, but if i want to accelerate even a small amount, eg. keep speed up an incline, i have to drop it a cog or two.
Is this just Old Engine Syndrome, or can I do something about it?
Cheers!
Bov
