If you really must use a rear mounted carrier make sure it's a good make such as Thule.
There's a reason why roof-mounted is more of a faff - it's far more secure and your beloved bikes are away from salt, road grime and other road users. And far less likely to fall off, damage the car and obscure rear lights. I've been seriously riding for 20+ years and always have and always will use a roof mounted carrier.

Many thanks
i agree with you ,I have used roof mounted racks for ages, but even the Thule Proride scratches my bike
I don't want the hassle of taking roof racks on and off and wondered if a boot version of good quality would be an option.
many thanks again

I've used the strap on boot versions and they are more hassle than roof bars IMHO. Always need tightening up after a few miles, straps rubbing paint, neoprene pads here and there, pedals inches from your boot!. I use roof bars and tow bar rack if fully loaded with kids bikes.

What did your car cost vs your bike? Or what is worth more to you?
If you put any of the boot mount (rubber feet on the paintwork type) carriers on your car, they WILL mark the paint.
If you are serious about the low down rear mount, why not consider a tow hitch, electrics and a hitch mounted carrier?

I have a custom built bamboo frame and I use a Thule 'pro ride' to clamp the joint just above the bottom bracket.
I also use a fork mount 'out ride' for my flimsy carbon framed TT bike and throw the front wheel in the back.

The soft jaws leave no mark on the hemp joint of the frame
Don't want to sound unhelpfull, the reason I'm banging on about the roof mounting is because I had a few trunk mount racks, the last being a 'Saris Bones3' and they have all damaged paint.
I first got a roof mount with an old 98 A6 Avant, I used a home made 1" box section cross bar with a fork bike mount, worked perfectly.
My B8 A4 is only the second car I have had that is worth more than my bikes!
So I had to make sure that the A4 got a good system and as I don't have a tow hitch, I leave my roof mount on all year round

And I thought Bamboo might have been a brand/framebuilder but no, it's actually bl**dy bamboo! Never seen that before! :biglaugh:

Cool bike !
You're right about the pads marking the paint, as the strap on's always chatter about. I always like the bikes being able to be locked onto the roof in plain sight rather than tucked away at the back if I ever have park up somewhere. I once saw a kids bike and strap on carrier all tangled up on the hard shoulder on the M74 near Glasgow. Maybe the driver hadn't even realised it had come off. Saying that our neighbour drove into a multi car park with his bike on the roof.

Very cool indeed. A guy regularly gets on my train with a bamboo-framed bike and some gorgeously high-end drivetrain kit.
And when I first started carrying bikes on the roof in about 1992, I too nearly went into a car park wondering why people were frantically waving at me! They saved me some money!
Another benefit of the roof....the bike are more resistant to theft up there. Whenever we stop at services or overnight on the continent if we can't take the bikes in with us (many holes are surprisingly helpful as long as the bikes are clean, especially in France and Italy) we complement the built in carrier locks with a series of cables and chains to make it harder and noisier to nick the bikes.
I'm considering fork mounts too for the next carriers now that my wife's just invested in a better bike. However well you fix them with wheels-on, the front wheel can wobble slight on the motorway even thought there's no chance of them falling off.

Quickest is the frame clamp and I use that all the time. The fork mount is great and really solid. I have one in the garage with the rail for the rear wheel and one of just the fork mount in my little right hand net space, I can then throw another bike on at short notice if my bike is on and I need to take a mates bike too.

Well I'll be.... Brilliant! I'm properly into my bikes, but hadn't come across bamboo before.

Thanks
actually the bike is worth as much as my car
i really don't want to put a roof rack on my car ,tow hitch is a possibility
I've seen a thule boot mount carrier that has rubber covered clips and seems to be a one click adjustment without straps ,I'm convinced that the roof mounting option isn't going to work so I will try this and see how it goes
many thanks to all for their input and advice ☺️

Me too,
If the BMC (Bamboo Monster Cross) and my TT bike were on there with my Klein MTB, they probably still cost more to replace than my A4
Still think you should consider a tow hitch and go rear mount without touching the paint, whatever you go for, a good store will let you try it first.
