I'm on my fourth A6 (C6) and considering changing to the C7 version. From experience I've always found the 2.7/3.0 TDI V6 in a different league to the rough, clattery 2.0TDI.
Is the latest incarnation of the 2.0TDI still noisy and rough? Is the 3.0TDI the obvious choice still?

The V6 is always going to be smoother than a 4 cyl. However (IMHO) the current 2.0TDi engine (also used in post facelift C6s) is neither rough or noisy and most of the time you are unaware it is even a diesel.

I've got a new C7 facelift with the 2.0 "Ultra" engine.
It's unbelievably refined for a 4 pot diesel, it's only when you hammer the throttle does it lose refinement and sound rough. You can still make a lot of progress without getting to that point though. You cannot hear nor feel typical diesel roughness. I had the 3.0TDI prior so I know what you are talking about.

I've also got a 2.0 TDI, pre Ultra, and whilst I have never had the pleasure of a 6 cylinder, it is stacks more refined than my previous C6 so I'm happy with it.
Wind the windows down and you'll be in no doubt it's a diesel but 99% of the time it's fine. And it turns itself off in jams so you can't hear it at all then.
