Hi. Has anyone done or has details how to do a Heads Up Display retrofit? The reason I'm asking is I'm seeing OEM kits for sale and in their descriptions it's saying that wiring looms and instructions are included and it's only a case of connecting four wires to equip a non HUD car with this cool feature. I'm sure there will be some coding to be done too but as I have access to a VCDS and have some experience with my last 3 audis, I don't think that will be a problem.

I'm assuming the whole upper dash will be different due to the hole/recess the HUD is kept in? Might not be but seems obvious to me it would need changing.

You are half right. There is also a new dash trim piece that needs to be bought, seen them for sale as well.

...and you'll need a new windscreen...

Chris is right, there are 2 versions of the dash, PR codes are PR-KS0 (without HUD) and PR-KS1 (with HUD) looking at etka & elsawin you will need to replace the dash. Also fitting HUD requires the windscreen to be removed!

Thanks for the info. So there seems to be some knowledge of what's needed, has anyone got a definitive list of what's involved?

Dashboard £1K
windscreen £600
Hud unit £2K
Bracket £26.00
Wiring harness (DIY)???

Above are the prices new and approximate, so your going to have to find a car being broken with that option.

It is a dash out as you have to fit a new dash and you have to attach the bracket to the cross member, which can only be accessed with the dash removed. You then will need to fit a new screen that is compatible with HUD.

and of course it will invalidate a large part of the warranty

I'd say it's worth replacing the car rather than this mod

^^^ This! :)

Pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, but you'd also need a new headlight switch as that has the HUD on/off & height adjustment knob on it.

I've seen aftermarket HUDs like this - they're a small box that sit in front of the windscreen and connect to the diagnostic port to show speed, revs etc. They won't be as clear or do everything the OEM HUD does (e.g. Nav instructions), but would be a much, much cheaper and simpler option! E.g. ifound Universal Car HUD Vehicle-mounted Head Up Display System OBDⅡ Overspeed Warning Compatible with: BMW 3 series/5 series/6 series/7 series/X3/X5/X6 Audi A6/A7 Peugeot 508/3008 Lexus GS450h (2nd generation): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ifound-Universal-Vehicle-mounted-Overspeed-Compatible/dp/B00K0D7VGI)

According to the Audi SSP the OEM HUD has six wires - power, ground, 2 display CAN and 2 control CAN.

To my knowledge it hasn't been possible to enable something as small as speed limit display with VCDS even with all components already on the car.

Therefore to even contemplate trying to retrofit the HUD is madness IMHO.

You'll end up with a dashboard with more creaks and rattles than you can shake a stick at. And most likely a car needing a full software reprogram from Audi which won't include for the now useless HUD that will have been fitted.

You'd lose less money trading in for a model with it already specced IMHO.

I loved the HUD on my Lexus. But on my A6, I've just put it on the "Impossible to retrofit, learn to live without it again" list. Just like Active Cruise Control.

ACC can be done. Quite easy from what I've read.

Interesting ;)... Can you expand?

I hadn't looked into it - just assumed it couldn't be done!

There are loads of threads on google.

Here is one.... Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Retrofit | Audi Forum (http://audiforum.us/threads/adaptive-cruise-control-acc-retrofit.13441/)

The wife wants a Q7 and considering it following the above link.

The thought of retrofitting something like ACC would really give me the jitters. Even after driving with factory-fitted ACC for nearly 3 years (and no problems) I find it difficult to trust it 100%, although I've tried it at over 200km/h and it works...

I would also imagine that your insurance company would not pay a claim if you run into the back of someone unless:
1/ You're a qualified Audi mechanic and you informed them about the modification
2/ They don't find out about it.

Sounds like a huge amount of hassle and worry for an option that's nice but just removes another part of the actual driving experience..

An A6 install of ACC would be more expensive - it also requires a replacement windscreen and the fitting of the ACC camera. At least one could save money by doing the ACC and HUD retrofits together, then it would only cost the price of a small car, rather than a big one!

To my mind this sort of retrofit involves (1) starting the car, (2) driving to the dealership, and (3) part exchanging your car for one with the goodies already installed.
