View Full Version : Audi S4 V8 sqeaking noise from engine

Evening everyone, thought id take a shot and see if anyone out there has an idea, ive recently bought a 2004 V8 S4 which is running fine no oil leaks or cooling system faults anyway this is the problem, when I start from cold I get the ushal timing chain brief rattle then its quiet engine runs fine but once it starts to warm up I get a sqeaking noise which sounds like its coming from the rear of the engine by the oil filer housing area. Ive replaced the tensioners for the alternator and belt (ridiculously time consuming but hey) no difference and tonight swapped the power steering fluid no change so im bit stuck unless anyone has an idea various ones thrown by friends are:
1. Dual mass flywheel squeaking
2. Water pump
3. Air con compressor clutch drive
the squeak follows engine speed at tickover its an intermitant squeak which then gets faster as you rev the engine when the car is stationary when moving exactly the same, there is no difference whether the air con is off or on, or when you turn the steering always the same noise.
Im wondering if its something like a tensioner on the chains squeaking but if it was that shouldn't it do it at cold start and go quiet once warmed up !! anyway look forward to any ideas as its sounds like a pram with a squeaky wheel :confused::confused:

That could be a chain issue, the BBK chain set up is notorious.

Hi think you could be right car started missing and stuttering under acceleration read the codes from the car came up with P1340 so i changed the cam sensor and no better now the EML is on and it is like it from cold so im guessing a mechanical problem. Anyone got any comments as i cant think of anything else

Took it to local Audi specialist they said that it is the chain tensioners and have given me an estimate of £4500 to remove the engine and replace the tensioners and chains 😩

Well had been offered £2500 for the car as it is and £3000 on eBay but don't want to sell it for that as the car is lovely so decided to bite the bullet and do it myself been working on cars for years and rebuilt engines and gearboxes reckon might take me a couple of months buying parts and doing the work but got to be worth it not sure how much a 2004 S4 is worth but got to be around £6k mark so if I have to spend £2k on parts better investment the. Selling car for. Loss

I would do the same if I were you. I'd make my best attempt in completing the work myself and then once repaired, it will be a keeper and will offer good fun reliable service for many years to come

£4.5K for doing that job properly is too cheap. A quick tot up of the MAJOR parts required (not including gaskets, seals, goo, oil etc) comes to £4096 inc VAT retail and that is assuming your engine is the later 2004 unit which does not require converting to use the later parts but as those parts were designed to stop the noise....

Hmmm well got quote including the tensioners electronic adjusters chains guides gaskets and seals parts came in at £2,627.18 and the labour was £1,320.50 says 25 hours at £51.50 an hour local Audi specialist so are you quoting main dealer prices ? My car is a May 2004

That was for all genuine parts at TPS supplied retail (if they want to give you their discount that is up to them) and typical UK non franchised dealer labour. I can't see many of the parts being available aftermarket but I can do all the chains and one of the tensioners at a bit less than genuine (such as the centre chain for £50.15 instead of £69) although it would worry me not having everything coming from one source. The book SUGGESTS 25 hours but most people would struggle to do the job properly in that time. It is all very well the Audi time figures saying 18 hours for one particular step but that was not worked out on an 11 year old car and is based on ideal circumstances in a fully equipped Audi workshop with every single part and tool at hand instantly, not "oi TPS, where are me flaming bits, you only sent one tensioner-not two" etc
To do the job PROPERLY you would need (these assume it is the pre 8E-4-200 000 engine)
079 103 051 F crankshaft shaft oil seal £26.77
028 103 059 A oil drain plug £12.11

079 109 139 M seal £2.65

Morning crasher well been an eventful weekend finally got the engine out of the car and the DMF is shot moves in both directions and bearing in centre cracking reckon caught in the nick of time going to take the covers of the engine in the week and see what joys are within, I had a look and my chassis number is 8E64A295880 so I presume is a later engine ?

8E64A295880 SHOULD be late but there is an asterix next to the VIN which means Audi are not sure!.....

In theory it should not make any difference, neither should give you a discount. You will have to balance what they offer with the backup available, TPS have zero technical backup and Audi will not want to know if you buy the parts from TPS. If a TPS supplied part fails, the appropriate make dealer HAS to deal with the warranty procedure on production of your TPS receipt. However, you can imagine that the Audi dealer will be more accommodating if you purchased the parts from them. If you want to avoid possible warranty pitfalls, buy all the parts from one place. Mix and match and come failure time, one supplier will blame the other.

Pretty sure I will get them from Audi come this far now be daft to scrimp and like you say the warranty is important really appreciate your advice, is there a site that I can get the part numbers from I used to have a BMW 330i and used a site called realoem for part numbers, just like to get it in my head all the parts I need

I used this site when I'm not at home: http://www.partscats.info
That's an online version of etka (vag part program). If you are going to need diagrams and parts on a regular basis is recommend buying this (cheap on eBay) and elsawin (also cheap on eBay)

Hi, I've just come across this post and wanted to know if you managed to complete the job without any issues. I'm just about to get and S4 and wanted to know if the squirming sound started after you bought the car or before but it wasn't noticeable? I would appreciate the feedback!

Hi the job was doable but you have to be prepared to do a lot of work the issue I I'd with mine was two fold the squeaking was present when I bought the car and developed into a vibration and a heavy clutch pedal this was due to the dual mass flywheel and clutch failing parts cost clutch and dmf £500 flywheel bolts £9 slave cylinder £40 the labour was free as my time but a major strip down as you need to remove front end and drop exhaust driveshaft etc was quoted £1800 to change the clutch for ref the second problem which developed at the same time was a miss fire this turned out to be broken timing chain guides I was lucky the engine didn't bend some valve again was quoted around £4-5000 dependent on why was needed in the end I did it myself and cost me £2000 in parts my Audi dealer gave me 20% of list which helped once engine was out did all the seals water pump alternator bearings took around a month start to finish so hope that helps if you need any other Info let me know

Hi, glad it was sorted in the end it's a major job by the sounds of it and way past my technical knowledge. I have just purchased a 2004 s4 Cabrio and pleased to report so far no chain noise except for a split second on startup. There are other minor issues but will get these sorted as soon as I can. Thanks for the reply and I hope all is well with the car.

It's ok they all make a slight rattle at cold start but should be quiet at warm start the thing to watch for is if you get flat spots or the eml comes on and you get cam sensor error then time to fix or sell great cars otherwise good power and handle like a dream but you got to keep on top with servicing don't scrimp not worth it 😃 Good luck
