Bugger, after a day in London, realised as the hub train pulled into the local station that I didn't have my A6 car key. The worst case scenario in my mind, I had left the key in the car and it would be stolen, best case the unlocked car with key inside would be in situ. It was neither.
The car was there locked, a kind lady gave me a lift home, but at home I can't find the spare key. Hope I find it in the morning, or else I suspect I am out of options before a costly Audi fix.
Questions...
My MMI says I have 3 keys encoded, I had the car from new but was only given 2 regular keys, never a plastic spare.
- Do you have a plastic key and how many keys are registered to your A6 since new?
- Do VWAudi finance retain a spare key?
- How far will the Audi Assistance go to help, recovery of the car to a dealership?
- Anyone have similar experience, what did you do? (I noticed another thread, unfortunately, they are not in my son's gym bag!)
The best solution, I find the spare tomorrow. Then contact the local dealer / Audi Assitance to see what they can offer.
If you got the car new you should have got the plastic key, 2 c7 and both times I got the plastic key. More than likely your plastic key is in the wallet with your manuals.
I would go back to the dealer and ask for the plastic key and blame them for not supplying it in the first place.
There isn't much options I'm afraid. As I think only dealers can code keys and supply them. Your only hope is finding that plastic key or spare.
Audi assist I reckon would try and get the car back to the dealers but not sure if they can get the car if you can get in to release handbrake and get it out of park if its an auto.
Check your house insurance. Mine covers for lost keys including car keys so will pay the bill up to £1k for replcing keys and stuff.

I haven't needed to try it yet with my A6, but the car I had before last was an E60 5-Series. With that, BMW Assist could lock and unlock the car remotely through using the SIM Card in the iDrive unit in the boot for BMW Connected Drive. Similarly, the BMW iPhone App enabled me to lock and unlock the car.
I know that with Audi they rely on you buying your own SIM card (rather than BMW supplying their own branded Vodafone SIM), but there might be a chance that Audi have a similar feature providing that you have got a SIM card in the dashboard?

You should be covered by the Audi Key Insurance. It came free with my car.

Hello razor77.
Recently I have bought an A6 C7 (used car from Audi Plus) and I noted a strange information on the MMI: 3 keys registered ???
The car arrived with:
-2 advanced keys like this Audi - Glossary - Advanced key (https://www.audi.co.uk/glossary/a/advanced-key.html)
-1 Black little plastic key (I dont know if it has transponder or anything inside)
-1 Little plastic translucent envelope with a sticker inside with the last 7 VIN numbers printed on it. At the outside a 6 digit number manually writed.
Nothing more.
Immediatelly I thought about the possibility that the previous owner programmed another replacement key, but reading your post...
Can other users having similar vehicle models check the "programmed keys" on the MMI to verify how many are programmed?
Regards
Joss.

Yes, the plastic key has a transponder and is thus the third registered key.
PS: My car is brand new and has three keys registered: 2 full remotes and the plastic key.

Same. I also did the "Why does it say 3 when I only have 2" thing when I first got it.

It is OK. I just test the plastic key alone and it can start as the other keys. Only difference is that the key must be very close to the antenna.
Thank you for your confirmation.
I was really worried about the possibility of a "third" key not under my control...

Joss.
