Hi all, just bought a 99 polo with 70,000 on the clock. One problem with it is there's a slight oil leak coming from around or from the selector shaft at the rear of the box. Anybody any idea's on curing this without removing the box ? Thanks.;)

fit new seal, wish it was that easy.Remove the linkage and very very very carefully remove the seal, try not to lever the seal against the shaft as any marking willresult in the new seal being damages and a further leak.then top up the oil.

Wondering if you guys can help.
I have a vw polo 2000 1.4 petrol.

If it's the same as the 1.0 gearbox take a look at the selector shaft. If it's leaking from there just drain the oil from the gearbox, remove the bolt from the selector linkage(size 10 bolt) pop the old seal out using a sharp screwdriver or bradal & fit the new seal. I bought the seal from my local VW dealer for €8. Make sure to lubricate the new seal when fitting to help it slide in push it in square (use a deep socket over the shaft & penny washer to push the seal in & it will go in square) Refill the gearbox & thats it. It might sound like a big job but believe me it's very easy. Good luck with it.;)

Sorry m8 what you mean by selector shaft, is where the drive shaft is next to the gear box. I took my car to the local garage and they said that the oil was leaking from the seal on drive side driveshaft (gearbox).
Some one also goes to me that you have to also change the tranmission seal, it that true.

Hi! I have a similar problem on 1.4 polo it looks like someone has been into it before and not sealed it properly... it's having new gearbox and clutch at the weekend only problem is I need to top up the oil to get it to the mechanic (my dad)- as it is a 2 hour drive and it sounds completely dry.... I can't find where to put the stuff! Sorry if I sound ditzy, but i'm really struggling with this one!

Sorry in the delay in getting back to you but there should be a bung at the front of the gearbox half way up which you need to remove & using a long nozzle on the gearbox oil bottle fill it until the oil comes out (of the same hole that your filling it through)
