Hi there.
I'm new to Audis but we have just bought an A4 1.8T auto convertible. It's a beautify can but I think there is something wrong with the auto. Is fine trundling round town but on faster roads we have a problem. If I put my foot down when we are cruising at, say, 40mph the revs will rise from c1800rpm to 5,000 but we get very little acceleration. Overtaking is virtually impossible and accelerating up hill is impossible.

What could be the problem and what might the cost of repair be??

Many thanks in advance. Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Is this a multitronic? They are notorious for problems when not maintained properly. You need expert advice and I fear deep pockets

In a nut shell do your homework before you buy! they are not called multi-chronic for no reason. I would only buy a manual gearbox, although the tiptronic are ok as are the later multitronic.

Thanks for the response.
Doesn't sound good. Just bought this car with FSH and MOT. Was hoping it would be ok. It's going into our local garage tomorrow to be put on a diagnostic computer thingie. Ill report back.

Wise words mate. I normally would but Id put loads of time into researching Saab verts only to find they are made of bits of ticki tacki.

As above, front drive auto multitronic, aka, cvt trouble pre 2005
If quattro 4 wheel drive auto, then tip tronic and should be safe, sorry to say it sounds like the multi is playing up and will potentially hurt the pocket, though sometimes an ecu or even a simple fluid change can get you back to the right side

Thanks for that mate. Everything pointing in the direction of CVT failure. Phoned the local Audi dealers and they suggested the same.
Time to reject the car mi thinks. It has an air leak in the cooling system and a dodgy radio too.

Cheers guys. Ill be back when I find another Audi .cert (manual).

Defo reject if you can but if you want an auto the tiptronic (Quattro) is safe and a great drive

Have spoken to the dealer. He wants to have the car back to diagnose the faults and fix for me. My worry is that it might go again in a few months.

Unless they full guarantee for at least 6mos I wouldn't consider it and in any event give it a thorough test before accepting it back.
