I sadly had to sell my 57 plate A4 after the balanced shaft went in my car engine and took out the turbo and brake servo and Audi quoted me £6k to repair.

Thankfully a fantastic mechanic came to my rescue and managed to get it back on the road for just under £800 but I decided to sell the car on.

i then bought a 59 plate insignia SRI and I have had nothing but issues with it and I have decided to look for another audi A4. It has to be Sline and has to be black. I have a budget of £11k.

I would really like a petrol car but have no experience of petrol Audis, the odd one I have found are 1.8 but my concern is that the 1.8 would be sluggish in comparison to the 2l diesels we have had.

Are there any engines to avoid? I have only found out since having my issue with my last audi that this was a common fault on the 2l diesel engine up to I beleive the 57 plate

should I avoid high mileage petrol? I have been told the FSI engine can run as long as a diesel but I'm not sure on that?

I've spoken to the mechanic who fixed my last audi and he has said to avoid the TSFIs as they are prone to turbo failure and they like to burn oil . Plus they also suffer from carbon build up in the inlet manifold. Anything over 60k is likely to need some work very soon
So looks like it will probably have to be diesel and am also considering an A6 and seeing if hubby will consider an SE rather than be dead set on an Sline

The common rail TDI isn't the same engine as your B7 and yes, the early B8 tfsi is renowned for being an "oil burner"...in certain cases. It's documented on here too.

i had an se before and it was more comfortable than this s-line but it's entirely personal choice.

If you don't mind the higher fuel consumption the 3.2 petrol is a great machine, you may have to hunt around a bit but its well worth it.

I've reserved a 1.8 TFSI SE (160bhp) at a local garage. It's got 30k miles on and is a dream to drive
We test drive a couple of SLines with the expectation of buying one but I have to say the comfort of the SE was outstanding

I didn't realise the 170ps was in your stated budget. So that's a b8.5 too?
Yes - Good choice.

Good choice!
I didn't spend the kind of money you have, but I was faced with an SE in the B8 shape or an S-line in a late B7. I much preferred the ride of the SE and the B8 platform looked better IMO so I bought the 2.0tdi SE and recently acquired some age appropriate S-line wheels, I'm happy with the compromise.
