Hi,

Been a busy two days tinkering with the 1999 1.8TQS, anyway here's my experience with the sluggish performance and surge I was experiencing when flooring it.

Only had the car 3 months, two of which I've been away with work so only done a few miles in it but found it to be sluggish, more than I remember my N reg 1.8 ( 150bhp ) being a "few" years ago. Also when giving it the beans it would surge horrendously, felt like the fuel was being cut off then it would carry on pulling again.

Anyway...Pulled all the pipework off from the air box to the turbo.
Tested the vacuum hose that runs from the inlet manifold to the diverter valve and it wouldn't hold any vacuum so it was the hose or the diaphragm in the valve itself. The hose was the original so ditched that and managed to break the nipple off the diverter when removing it! New valve, 06A145710P ordered from Audi ( £31.34 ) and fitted with new silicon vacuum hose.
Also replaced the PCV, 034129101B, (£16.32 ).

Checked out all the pipework, seemed fine. Removed the MAF and cleaned it with Halfords Electrical Contact Cleaner.

Also whilst everything was out I tested the wastegate actuator on the turbo by attaching a hand pump to it, giving it a pump and making sure the actuator rod moved and returned freely when pressure was released.

Put it all back together this morning and took it for a test drive ( once i'd replaced the coolant and thermostat too, see my other thread )

Result........pulls like a train, no surge or sluggishness happy days!

I can highly recommend investing in a vacuum tester for these cars that depend on the air system to function. Mine was a BERGEN one, £26 ish from Amazon.

Hope this helps someone!

Cheers,

Leigh
