Hi Guys

I'm new on the forum and was hoping to try and get some help identifying an issue I'm having with my 2009' Seat Leon FR TDI 170.

Engine is a 'BMN' Engine code (2.0 R4 16v TDI PD 103-125 kW)

I started the car the other day and noticed that the glow plug light was flashing. I turned the ignition off & on again to see if it returned....this time the Engine management light came on (solid, not flashing). Again, I turned the engine off & on again and finally this time, both came on (glow plug flashing orange and EML on solid - again orange).

I drove the car to my work where I could scan it - this time only the EML was on and the car drove fine (i.e no limp mode etc and no noticeable sign of any issue in drive-ability).
I scanned it and it's coming up with the following fault code:

1 Fault Found:
005522 - Altitude Sensor / Boost Pressure Sensor: Implausible Correlation
P1592 - 006 - Short to Plus

I can clear the fault while the engine is running but as soon as I switch off and on again it re-appears? Also, if I turn the engine on quickly in one movement (i,e not 1st click, wait for glow plug light to clear etc etc) no warning lights come on....??

Initial search on Ross Tech Wiki seems to suggest MAP Sensor issue..... If so are these easy to get at/replace?

Any ideas... I would be extremely grateful for any assistance. Hoping someone else may have come across this as somepoint....

Cheers

Alex

Hello and welcome to the forum.

There was a tech bulletin issued by VW relating to your trouble code. Info below. I hope it helps.

Regards.

Jim.

VW TSB No. 2012601/1

Engine doesn't work, entries 18000, 05522, 08825 or 00665 Release date: 11-Apr-2009

Customer statement / workshop findings

The engine has no performance, the engine warning light is on and the following entry is logged in the engine control unit:

• 05522 P1592 altitude sender signal/boost pressure sensor - implausible ratio

• 18000 P1592 altitude sender signal/boost pressure sensor - implausible ratio

• 08825 P2279 air leak in intake system

• 00665 P0299 below boot pressure control limit

Technical background

Transfer resistance in the engine wiring loom.

Production change

Gradual introduction of an optimised engine wiring loom

Part number Designation

1KD 971 658
Adapter wiring loom
Proceed as follows:

• Check whether the complaint is present. Switch on the ignition, select the function 01 self-diagnosis on and check in the measured value block 10 whether there is a deviation of over 50 mbar in display field 2 and 3.
The measured pressure values depend on the altitude and the weather. Tolerance range up to an altitude of about 300 m.

If there is an increased deviation, proceed as follows:

Clean earth points

Fit wiring loom (part number 1KD 971 658)

Update the software of the engine control unit

Hi Flash

Thanks for that, it was bang on the money!

Got the Sensor & replacement section of loom for approx £80 from TPS and talked SEAT into allowing me to supply the parts & they did the swap for £114 (ex VAT) so about £200 all in.

They gave me a book price of 1.25 hrs for the job (which I though wasn't much - so didn't complain) when I finally got the call at the end of the day the Service guy said that it had taken the technician about 3.5 hours to get to the parts and run the new loom in so def one SEAT lost out on as they honoured the 1.25hr book price, so fair play to them.

Problem 100% cured so thanks for the info! :-)

Glad the info was useful, Alex.

I've had to deal with that fault on a few VWs in the past. I've never spent 3.5Hrs on one though, but how long it takes is usually all to do with how difficult it is to remove the shear bolts that hold the engine ECU on.
I guess yours must have been thread locked in or something :). At least they didn't charge you any extra for the additional time.

Thanks for posting back. I'm sure your experience will help others in the future.

Jim.

Just glad it's sorted, thanks again!

Jim, have you got any experience with the Stereo in these card? I've lost FM signal completely out of the blue....

I've had the head unit out but I can't see any loose cables...

Yeah, I read your post about the radio problem. It's unusual for the FM signal to go. Normally the problem is the amplifier in the aerial base gets damaged due to water ingress and that causes the AM signal to drop out and the FM signal gets weak. I don't think that's what's happened on your car because you still have AM.

What I'd do is remove the radio and disconnect the aerial connector. Now get a length of wire and touch the end of it onto the center pin of the aerial socket on the back of the radio and see if you get any FM reception. Tune to Radio 1 or 2 that are usually good strong signals all over the country. Just be careful to only touch the wire onto the little center pin of the aerial socket. If you still don't get any signal I'd say the fault is internal within the radio.

Another thing that comes to mind...do you have any sort of media player, DAB adapter or phone interface that has an FM signal modulator in it. If there is something in the car transmitting a strong FM signal, that could block FM signals getting to the radio.

Jim.

Hopefully one of the mods will mark "RESOLVED"

This will help to identify a particularly and potentially useful thread to others with a similar issue
Thanks for sharing

Brilliant, thanks Jim. Will give the wire experiment a go. Just to confirm is the aerial socket the small white connector (on it's own) down in the bottom right hand corner....? (on the opposite side to the speaker wire connectors)

Thanks

That all depends on whether your looking at the front of the radio or the back :)
Looking at it from the front, the aerial socket is to the right and it's a little connector on it's own

I see what you mean! :o

I've had a quick go as disconnecting it and it's being a right pain in the a** to come free....seems to have a safety mechanism which clicks in into position...I'm struggling to get in behind it as there's very little slack without disconnecting all the wires/connectors. Do you just need to pinch it in (with some force) or does this lock in some other way.... (I assume it's to stop the cable coming out accidentally)?

There is a little tab that you need to press in to release the connector.
