Well folks, looks like the crackdown is starting. Before long if you drive a diesel you will be less popular than Ukip.

Posted it here cos it will affect us more than most. Newer cars will slip under the barrier, for now.

Aren't almost all delivery vehicles, public transport vehicles and local authority vehicles diesel powered? Well thought out policy that.

How about a 5 mile range electric HGV, bus, taxi, fire engine and ambulance. All tax free and non polluting.

Where are these vehicles? Who would pay for them? Fire engine needs an engine to pump water, hydraulics for ladders etc you'd need huge batteries for that. Ambulance has a load of electrical equipment that is a heavy drain on a battery you can't have people dying because of flat batteries. The UK had 100's of miles of electric buses (trams) they were look upon as old fashioned and got rid of. That leaves the HGV. What size electric motor to pull 40 tons? What would the batteries weigh? How long to charge them? etc. There isn't really a viable alternative to these vehicles, apart from taxis. I seldom get across the pond now but I see very few charging points for electric vehicles on this island. I'm sure any government will be able to reach an "accommodation" with such diesel vehicles by raising their taxes.

Doc, Totally agree with your post, I suppose you could retrofit petrol engines in such large vehicles.
I have not looked but does anyone know of a petrol powered HGV type unit....Google in progress.

My God man have you gone mad? Instead of using a 1hp horse those polluting narrow boats use a Lister diesel engine of up to 20 hp. Please think of the children!

Its been like that in Germany for a while now but fear not, your friend the DPF is here, cars in Germany have pollution ratings and stickers for the windscreen, these are red, yellow and green. If your car is rated green with a DPF you can drive anywhere anytime, yellow you are limited to certain zones and times. Red is a no go for certain areas city centres.
It really effects the used car market, you can have cars with similar specs differ by price depending on the rating.
Also its more than stickers, they are a quick visual indication the system is tied into the CCTV NPR system so you can be automatically detected and fined if you drive a yellow or red car into a controlled zone.

Another scheme to allow the rich to do anything they please, red car for fun, yellow car for I might need to do x, and a green car to go into the city.

Also at the moment there are 4 categories, ( I have never seen a cat 1, green is 4, yellow is 3 etc) there are some newer cars rated as a cat 5 so perhaps cat 5 is on its way with a further tightening of regulations.

I like Zollaf the Lexicographer's narrow boat suggestion. Were the canals allowed to become overgrown? I like trams and they're making an expensive comeback. Big petrol engines (mmmmm v8) sounds great. Maybe hybrids? I have read loads of stuff about petrol hybrids they don't seem to be terribly economical when the engine is running

They are called disability scooters, and judging by some of the riders they could actually be classed as HGV's :biglaugh:
Sorry but the thought of a fire engine scooter has me chortling away here, only thing funnier was it being driven by a Despicable Me 'Minion'

Sticker system would appeal to governments, they already have the CCTV to enforce it and taxes are always welcomed. In fact the Irish government is talking about adding a tax to dog food to pay for more dog wardens. Try making that up!

Wonder if they will clamp down on the so called "low emission" buses .... I was at a set of traffic lights a while ago behind a bus with "Low Emission Bus" plastered all over the back.... I had to wait for the black smoke to clear before I could move away so I could see the road!! and that was not the first time I had seen this...

I tried a green "V" sticker that was on one of the less appealing dishes in a Chinese ready meal banquet. It didn't stop Vector chasing more pheasants than normal which were clearly more relaxed by the sticker, although I've yet to establish whether they're dyslexic and thought KFOR had been called in...

Indeed but you should probably attach a garden flame thrower (or three) to the front of the chipper to ensure the pointless, low value waste you are processing is dried out a bit and does not clog the chipper- and to ensure the overall experience is something to truly reflect upon before the non existent dream afterlife.

If you want to see real pollution watch any airliner start up it's engines. Then consider that the plane flies at 30/35K feet and is spreading that much muck high in the sky. Lovely!
As to what our elite MP's AKA cash grabbing vermin will do about the older (pre Euro 6) diesels remains to be seen. I doubt much will happen in the short term. Europe may force their hand to clamp down in some way, but even that won't be happening all that soon.
There will need to be at least three to five years worth of the tried and tested brain washing propaganda and scary tv shows to convince the public that these diesels need to be taxed off the road. You know the ones, the very same as used on topics like, 'greenhouse gas' that became 'global warming' NASA then threw a major spanner in the works when they stated that the planets in the solar system were all warming, but they didn't know why. So to keep the momentum going, along came 'climate change' and more recently 'extreme weather' Then it was proven that the planet is in fact cooling not warming at all.
Most of the scare stories are utter BS. total tosh dreamt up by people who need to justify and keep their large wages, solid gold pensions and gigantic I know better than you because I'm a scientist type ego's. Aided and abetted by our political lords and masters (our servants)who want to raise even more tax so that they can have an even more lavish lifestyle on the poor old hard pressed taxpayers. In the mean time we'd all better be good sheep and do as we're told.

Those Dacias are selling well in Ireland too, the 1.5 diesel especially. They're very cheap and people are getting them on 5 years 99 yoyo deposit finance. What's the resale value of a 5 year old Dacia? A pint and a bag of nuts perhaps

Easy answer, tax, more tax and even more tax. Plus endless worry that at MOT time it will fail by just missing the almost impossible target. Oh plus you will need even more adblue on which you will pay vat. Did I mention more tax?
