I have 2L of Audi brake fluid (dot 4) it has never been opened but has an expiry date 2014.
Why does brake fluid have an expiry date?

normally its because it absorbs water from the air, but since this is still sealed then its probably fine to use.

It is cheap enough to buy, bin it and buy a new one. All products like this have a shelf life, as Roy says with brake fluid it is because it absorbs water. Adhesives, oils etc all have a shelf life and degrade. Even tyres have a shelf life.

Sometimes they put expiry dates on stuff to keep their liabilities finite. It's just a business practice.
