Hi Guys, can anyone help.I was sitting in traffic and my airbag light came on,so i took the car to my local garage. The chap there rigged up the laptop and it showed a fault. The screen on the laptop read:::
error code 01217
side airbag squib circuit,driver side
Above upper regulation limit threshold
Permanent
Now the question is,what does this mean or which airbag.I drive a mk5 golf gt tdi 2.0 and its full of airbags.
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

It means the circuit resistance of the driver's seat airbag is too high. It's not normally the airbag itself that goes faulty but the wiring on the seat base. If you take a look under the front of the seat you should see a yellow connector with 3 wires. The normal fix is to cut the yellow connector from the seat base wiring loom and either solder or crimp (using butt connectors) the wires back together.
Just be sure to identify the correct connector. It's the one under the seat base not the connector under the cover at the front of the seat. Photo attached.

Thank you for the quick reply. Can i take it that "squib circuit" = Air bag igniter. Next question where is this air bag located,ie, in the center door pillar or front door post etc...Thanks again for the reply.

The side airbag is mounted within the seat back. That's why the wiring is on the seat base. And yes, the squib circuit and igniter circuit are the same thing.

Hi Guys, again sorry for the slow reply...As Always this problem was put off to the last minute. With the MOT looming i decided to look at the problem with the air bag light,so i cut the plug under the seat and joined the wires direct and as predicted it did cure the problem. Thanks for all the help.Cheers For now.
