View Full Version : Please Help A4 Avant 2002. Hard brake pedal and limp mode. Possibly EGR?

I am new to the Audi scene and my A4 Avant has the hard brake pedal issue and often goes into limp mode after the slightest of hard accelerating. After reading several posts on here that I could be a vacuum issue I have had a nosey around the vacuum pipes to see if I can find the collapsed pipe. I haven't manage to find one but I have noticed that there is a clip on my EGR Valve that has broken and I'm wondering if this could be related? Any help would be appreciated. I'm not comfortable driving round with a random braking problem.

Don't think so but seems you need a scan soon and also check under the battery for water ASAP

I'll check on the morning when I have a bit of light. Would it be a new servo if it's been drowned?

looks like the arm has snapped off take the rubber pipe off the egr and plug it with something (block it) take it for a drive see if any improvment also you need to do a scan on the car

A golf tee is useful for blocking pipes :)

I'll give it a go in the morning. I don't do golf so a nail or something will have to do. :)

I'll let you know how I get on.

I need to find someone with a VCDS.

There's loads of people on here with VCDS there's sure to be someone near you. You need 10 posts to PM them, You can simply bend over the vacuum pipe and tie it with twine https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?dg=feature&msa=0&mid=zwQHurSsCMz8.kMTwqF0PoXwc

Thanks for the link. Didn't get chance to try the pipe this morning so will do it when I return from work. I have a friend who is going to scan my car, hopefully this weekend so I'll let you know what it says.

that broken thing controls the anti shudder valve inside the egr valve. its a butterfly valve that will now be closing itself and preventing air getting in, hence the power issue which you think is limp mode.

I blocked the rubber pipe and it didn't make any difference. I took the battery out and it is as dry as a bone. Is there anything else I can check before my friend manages to come around with his VCDS?

Would blanking off the EGR make any difference?

It could turn on your check engine light

My friend has scanned my car. Comes up with Error 17964 - Charge Pressure Control. I did a trusty google search of the error and it brought me to a page on here ( Fault Code 17964 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?57456-Fault-Code-17964)) directing me to the vacuum pipe under the EGR valve. As the post suggested I sucked on the pipe and sucking wasn't a problem at all so I am know it has a leak. Can anyone confirm that this is the pipe that is likely to be causing me lack of power and braking issues?

Thanks in advanced. :)

The black rod at the side of your egr is detached and looks as though its bent back my bet is the diaphragm inside is knackered also take the big pipe off the egr and check the position of the butterfly flap and for black crud, also trace the 1/4" vac pipe back to its solenoid and check for leaks.

I've ordered a new EGR and some new vacuum pipe as mine it has more holes than swiss cheese!
