Thanks for the reply, but sorry, should of mentioned it's a 2.0tdi multi tronic cvt. One of garages said I need to change the spigot bearing at the same time? Is this true for the multitronic?

I'd go for the starter motor too. Whilst the DMF is out the motor will be simple. Apparently.

I got mine changed when the DMF was changed as the indy specialist reckoned it was one of the causes of the DMF failure. And he reckons that starter motors go over time anyway. Certainly the experience I've had on 2 or 3 diesels now.

Quick update, DMF was changed, fixed the problem with the rattling on a hot start. Horrible noise, got a little bit embarrassing by the end when there was passengers in the car :S. All is well now!

Those were my symptoms too, great you've got it sorted.

Did you get starter motor done too? If not, problem might come back over time.

Starter motor wasn't delivered on time and the garage was being a bit of a douche about it, so just cancelled the order and left it. Hopefully, it stays strong!

If anything like my 3.0 then the starter can be changed from underneath quite easily in your own time.

Hello mate,

How much did it end up costing you then? Parts + Labour? Is there anywhere you would recommend to purchase the Flywheel from?

Hi mate, highly recommend LUK flywheel, don't be tempted by the cheaper stuff, just not worth the hassle and I got mine from carparts4less, but check out eBay too. The flywheel was 200 with discount codes and fitting was another 150 at my local indie.

How long would you exepct the flywheel to last for (mileage wise) and what are the symptoms of a failing one?

My last one lasted 50k, but I think they supposed to go for about 60k. Symptoms are rattling noises coming from the front when starting the car when it's hot.

I'm sure others will give you more symptoms but that was the one bothering me the most.

Hmmm, I get a ratling from the car when it's on tickover. I suspect a ratling heat shield above the exhaust. I think my clutch is past it's best as the biting point is quite high and sometimes I get quite alot of judder when setting off in first when cold.

Anything else that might indicate a failing DMF?
