I own a 2.0 TDI Passat B6 4Motion. I've noticed a large whooshing noise (which sounds like very loud road noise) from the rear of the car when accelerating in all gears at 1500-2000 RPM. It only occur 3-4 times a journey and lasts literally a second or 2 and its more noticeable when going up hill and when the car is cold. I have no idea what it could be.

Any help and advice would be appreciated

Thanks

I cannot say for definate but when I got my Rover 45 V6 in 2001, I had a similar problem and suspected the exhaust. Rover replaced the back box under warranty as the car was only a few weeks old. The problem went away for a couple of weeks and then reappeared. I only used the car locally so although the engine got hot the exhaust didn't at the back end. We had decided to go for a day out to York and on joining the motorway there was even more noise on the slip road, from the rear end. When we joined the flat of the motorway there was a deluge of condensation water came out of the car exhaust as I was accelerating and checking the mirror. The noise stopped immediately after. I think I must have got rid of 4 pints of condensate. That maybe what is up with your car as diesels take longer to warm up in cold weather.

Thanks for the reply, so did you manage to solve the problem? Or is it something that you just lived with?

Thanks

Not long after I moved to another hospital 45 miles away ( I worked in critical care), so the car was on the motorway 90 miles a day and the problem was gone. I think that it may be worth you having a fast trip out somewhere and see if it cures the noise. It may be something else of course as I am just working from experience as to what it MAY be. Just noticed that you are from York. What a coincidence that we were going there when I discovered what our problem was.

I sometimes get a similar sound, but it's the wife sucking her teeth at my driving. If I accelerate very hard it turns into a "tut-tut" noise.

I get that since i bought my 2l sport ,more noticeable in 2-3 gear , and i 've read its the boost pressure release.
Try this when changing from2-3 gear : accelerate and take the foot of the pedal like let it cooldown and after that press clutch and change to 3rd, if the noise its not there anymore then this should be it, if the noise its still there maybe its not same issue.
