View Full Version : Please Help Audi A6 2005 wont start (like once a week)
Hi Everyone,
I need some advice and help on a continuous problem i am facing with my 2005 A6 2.0 tdi
I drove from Harrow to Brentford which is like 10 miles, parked the car, tried to start after 5 mins, won't start !!!!!
Checked the battery meter, was full until i tried starting again, it went down dramatically to 10% only
A friend was kind enough to come all the way and jump start it, it was the second time he had to help (previously it was last weekend and it was saturday)
I come home, grabbed the multimeter, shows 13.8v when the motor is running. Turned off the car, 12.5v on battery
Starting ok for now but the problem above happens randomly and like once a week?????
I tried to take off the brown wire off the battery when the car is running, it kept running!!!!!
Hopefully someone with more experience can help!!!!
Thanks in advance

Get is scanned with VCDS, 13.8v is the minimum but depends if the car was under load (aircon, stereo, heated seats, blower & lights on). If with all of those on and it's kicking out 13.8v then it will be ok. If not tested under load then do that test and check the output.
How old is your battery, typically they'll last for 5yrs?
If a new alternator is needed the front bumper does not need to come off and the job can be done from underneath. Based on my experience I'd recommend getting your old alt off if diagnosed as faulty and having it rebuilt at a local battery specialist, they normally charge £35-40.
Hi mark,
13.8v was with aircon on
i recently bought this car on 22nd November, I accessed the battery and looked very small for the size of the car. It is a lion 74ah battery from eurocarparts and the sticker says it was purchased on 4th nov hence it is most definate the trader put a new battery in.
i have VCDs lite would that do the job? I can't find the cable but I have it somewhere!!!!

Am guessing that dealer put in the cheapest batery that came up on their list to my (albeit limited) knowledge it should either be a 90 or 110ah battery for your car.
My suggestion would be to put your reg into the ECP site and see what it throws up, then tomorrow speak to a main dealer and ask them.
When it's confirmed you've got the wrong one get the place you bought the car to replace it with the right one....by all means they can have your one back :biglaugh:

If your year model has a box on the battery for monitoring charge , i guess the dealer wont have input the batteries model code to tell the box what Ah rating it is / battery make. It may be your issue.
I tried connecting VCDs 1.2 lite that I have on my computer with the USB cable but it won't connect to the car? any help on this will be appreciated
****** after searching found out I need a hex+can cable that's why it is not working with my a6 4f *********

Your dealer may not be wrong - Both ********* and ECP show a 75Ah replacement for your car. I wouldn't fit a Lion from ECP but it's exactly what the trade will do (ask me how I know..). It comes with a three year guarantee so can't be that terrible. I plan to swap mine out next autumn at the 2 1/2 year point.
I've been looking at the question of recoding the battery entry with VCDS and have formed the opinion that 1; Generally the car will relearn the characteristics of the new battery and all will be OK. However 2; If the previous battery has died so that the central electronics registers a very low battery capacity, then it seems to stick with this and continues to treat the new battery as if it was goosed. This actually has little effect in real life; certain comfort functions (non-essential electrics) will have reduced output but at the heart of it the central electronics is in a mode where it wants as much battery charging to take place as possible. New batteries from Audi have a BEM code which needs to be put in to overcome this; find a friendly forum member with a 75Ah genuine battery and try his BEM code.
But I agree with other posters that you may have an alternator output fault. Scan for this and any other faults; get a new BEM code put in; tell us how you get on. The battery is unlikely to be your issue but get that charged up anyway to rule out the possibility that it is low on charge and not helping the analysis of your issues.
Practice your German here. Or use auto translate. MOLL Batterien – Prämierte Erstausrüster-Qualität Made in Germany (http://www.moll-batterien.de/downloads/uebersicht.html) - download the page which says "Wichtiges zum "Anlernen" von Batterien in Fahrzeugen mit EMS (http://www.moll-batterien.de/downloads/Moll_keine_Not_ohne_Code_web.pdf)" "Codeeingabe nicht zwingend" means code input not necessary.

Vcds lite won't work. You need the full hex can version
Just happened again!!!!
the battery shows 12.10v
i have been testing the alternator output every time I have started the car which is 13.8v average so do you really think it could be the alternator?

It might - might - be. Get it properly charged and then start investigating. Plain voltage readings with the battery still connected are only a rough guide. Taking readings up to an hour after the engine has been running will show a bit higher for example; and any load connected to the battery will lower the reading. There are at least three possibilities;
1. Your battery is goosed. Unlikely if it only went in in November. Not impossible.
2. You have a current drain happening when the car is off. Favourite here is the radio not going off properly. Can be fixed with the latest software for your MMI. Check the number.
3. Your alternator is not happy. 13.8V is a bit low but if it's trying to run lots of other stuff, not impossible. Get the battery fully charged and then you should see 14.2 - 14.4 V if it's happy.
If you don't have access to a VCDS scan you need a good autoelectrician. But start with a charged battery, finding out the MMI software number, and report back.
I have looked into the MMI version and this is what i get from the display:
SW:C6-HU 21.2.0 0534

Your software is the 2120 version; latest is 5570. If the battery is fine, and the alternator output checks out, then you might want to upgrade to the 5570 software. Some other peeps on here have fitted switched relays to overcome the power drain issues.

Your dealer may not be wrong - Both ********* and ECP show a 75Ah replacement for your car.
I think dependant on the wiz bangs fitted to the car, so for example one with MMI High, a sunroof, bose, 2/4 zone climate, electric mirrors and electric seats may have a larger battery than a car without them fitted.
Mine is just base SE
no bose, no bluetooth, no folding mirrors, no electric seats, no leather, no sunroof etc even the alloys are 16 inch hehe
At 8:45 am It won't start again, stuck in a petrol station, anyway, called rac, they will be here after 10am,
anyway, left the car there and came back at 10am, wola STARTED up on the first key turn !!!!!!
What on earth could the problem be :aargh4:

Get the battery capacitance tested as this will have an big impact on the battery condition.
The CCA rating should on a good battery be close to what the tester is showing.
If all ok then start to look at the relays in the start circuit first.

What on earth could the problem be :aargh4:
The RAC man could have ruled out/in the battery quite easily.
When you say won't start do you mean you get no cranking at all, if so the starter or it's earth or the connections could be the issue, so please clarify if the starter is actually turning over or your just getting nothing? Are any of the internal electrics coming on?
Easy to clean up contacts and check tightness of connections of alternator/starter from underneath with the aid of a set of drive-on ramps, so if you know anyone with a set see if you can borrow them, also check the VCDS location map to see if there's anyone that can run a full scan for a few beer tokens.

Hi,
When I first got my car it would often throw up a warning in the DIS to say low battery, it always started fine however.
Long story short, I would do the following:
Ensure your battery is good, of the correct type, and the alternator is working.
Run a VCDS scan, pay attention to the battery manager (module 77 from memory) and that there are numbers in the coding section not just zeros. If zeros or you want to be certain follow ross tech guide on VCDS to re-code the battery in.
Remove fuses for the Nav, Radio and Amplifier. Refer to owners manual but in mine it was the 3 x 15 amp fuses, brown section. fusebox drivers side boot.
Update MMI to latest 5570 version with either engine running or battery charger connected.
Now in my case I did the normal route of giving to garage, paying for new battery and finding out a week later low battery.
After much research I noticed 2 things, firstly if I didn't have Radio, AMP and NAV connected battery didn't drain, also my battery manager had no coding at all.
Coding will affect how the BM controls the charging and discharging of the battery, no coding meant it had no idea what to do.
I did put in an ignition switched relay on suggestion of others so that the radio, amp etc only got power when ignition off. Now I have the battery coded I have put back the NAV fuse and all is good, may later but other modules back off relay.
Also note that lead acid batteries hate being discharged more than 50% so there is now a good chance your current battery is weak or won't last as long as expected.
Keep going with it, be methodic and you will get there.
Good luck.
Andy

Get the test done as per post 15, a battery can look good after a charge but essentially it only holds X amount of charge.
The MMI will tell you that its ok then as quick as nothing the battery is depleted.
Hi everyone,
Gave it to a garage and they deemed the battery is the problem. Quick visit to eurocarparts and they replaced the battery under warranty (still the lion one 74ah 680cca if i remember correctly)
It was running great and 2 weeks on, same issue again!!!!! I was just rescued by RAC and upon the patrol checking everything his report is "battery ok" charging systems needs to be checked (alternator throwing 13.4v), he did also mention that I am doing too many short journeys and the battery is not getting a full charge hence I should have a bigger battery 95ah 800cca one is recommnded on ECP from Excide (currently for around 88 quid)
should it be the battery or a new alternator (looks like the alternator on this one is a easy job)
thanks again in advance
Should I go and get the alternator changed
If your in East London I can do a scan for you.
I am in NW london but coming to east london mon-wed so would you be kind :biglaugh:

Should I go and get the alternator changed
My understanding (albeit limited) is that a healthy alternator needs to be putting out around 14v, 13.4 is definately too low. That coupled with short journeys will mean your battery (especially one under spec) will deplete quite quickly.
As to the ease of change, my local mechanic changed from underneath on my 07 3.0 and charged me a mere £35!
Since yours is within warranty it should be done under that FoC, also I would recommend asking them for a receipt showing the alternator make/model fitted and also ask for the old alternator back, this will enable you to:
1) Prove they've actually changed it with the correct one
2) Take the old alternator to a specialist battery shop so it can be refurbed (usually about £35), you can then either sell it on for £70 or else keep as a spare! :biglaugh:
Good luck!

I think it's module 61 (at least that's the module I get for batt. regulator)

Hi tyro no problem just send me a pm.
Cheers HMagic I managed to get a cable and software from my friend
I was able to get into the system and look into module 61 and i tried to code for a new battery and it came up with a message to either use some default values or edit existing or cancel since i need some data equipment  anyway i just said use the default 1234/1234/12345 (or something like this) values and it said coding accepted
Can someone shed some light if i have actually coded it right? on top of that the daft battery is a lion but i had only varta and exide which I was aware off and a few other vendors, no lion, no bosch etc
Lets see if this makes any difference !!!!

No problem.
Am not sure about battery programming but here's an article from Ross tech on how to.
Audi A8 (4E) Battery Replacement - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A6_(4F)_Battery_Replacement)
since the radio might be the battery drain issue, I have been recommended to update the mmi, I can see that this can be done easily with some CDs, saw them on ebay for £30 odd quid, is this what I need to update?

I would try audi themselves first for the cd. Sometime there prices are much cheaper then ebay so I've learnt the hard way.
Audi in chingford are pretty helpful.

Just read your scan. Was that done after you programmed the new battery?
Did you clear the codes before you took the one you posted?

Yes i cleared the codes after, I just changed the serial number and re-coded battery since the Lion 096 74ah battery i can't find it on the list in VCDS

Lol that's a decent 400% profit
do the CDs really cost just 7 quid?
