Hi guys,
Had my first ever proper breakdown the other day. My Passat just simply cut out whilst stationary at some lights with the engine management garage message on the dash. It wouldn't restart so had to get the RAC out to help. They towed me to a safer spot then ran their diag's and told me it was an intermittent fault on the engine speed sensor. The RAC tech said try to start it again and it fired up straight away as normal. It had been roughly an hour after it cut out and I had been trying it every now and then but with no luck. 10 minutes later the fault came back but this time while I was driving - the dash binged, the rev gauge dropped to nothing, it kind of stuttered once and then came back to life in limp mode. Got it home to scan myself and got the following:-
1 Fault Found:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P0322 - 006 - No Signal - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000001
Fault Priority: 5
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 136
Mileage: 276122 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2000.00.00
Time: 12:40:32
Freeze Frame:
RPM: 0 /min
Text: 80 Nm
Speed: 46.0 km/h
Bin. Bits: 00000001
Bin. Bits: 01000011
(no units): 11.0
Angle: 0.0 °
This seems to tie up with the RAC so got it round to a local garage who said he'd done speed sensors on other VW's but not a Passat before. Anyway got a call later yesterday afternoon saying he can't do it as he can't physically turn the bolt which secures the old sensor to the block. Is this normal or usual?
My cars a 2006 Passat Sport with the 2.0 Tdi BKP engine having covered just over 171k miles. Clutch and flywheel were replaced about 60k ago if that has any bearing on the matter at all.
From this mornings experience it seems to start OK when it's cold and runs fine until after about 4 miles or about 15 - 20 mins it comes back into limp and once stopped won't restart until it's cold again.
Any guidance on getting the sensor out will be much appreciated. I'm hoping it is just the sensor?
Cheers,
