Take the rear cover off(lift tab to clear and pivot away),if you then see a single 3 pin connector, onto a single combined main/dip bulb, its an H4.If its two separate 2 pins, you will
need an H7.Hope this helps.

All the pre facelift B5's I've ever dealt with no fog lights = H4 bulbs for main/dipped headlight. Foglights fitted in headlamp unit =H7 for dip and main beam. As stated above whip the rear cover off and see how many bulbs are in there and how many pins there are on the bulb(s)

You could fit upgraded bulbs ie Osram night breaker or similar, to give a better light on dip. It might be an idea to get your friendly MOT station to check your headlight aim.

One other suggestion not too sure if it applies to your particular car, but this caught me out once on a B5. Check that if fitted your headlight beam control switch is in position 0 as this can lead to poor/too low beams. Also check that the electric adjuster motors, if fitted are actually working and doing their job (one on our car an SE model with foglights built into the headlamps, had detached from the reflector. It's a ball and socket fitting, the reflector was free to move slightly and caused a fair bit of head scratching, as the beam was wandering. Finally the penny dropped and I worked out what was going on!)

Hope this helps

Fitting brighter bulbs such as the Osram nightbreakers, being a straight swap, will cause no issues. With the led sidelights, your vehicle being can-bus,will likely need can-bus
error free bulbs.I drive a 1995 which is non can-bus so I might be corrected on this.I currently use the Osrams, they do make a big difference.
