Hi Guys
I previously wrote on this forum (i think) about a flywheel. I have a 2006 A6 Tip Auto 7 speed. I have been told that the flywheel is on its way out as the mechanic heard a grinding sort of sound when starting the car. He said it was definitely the flywheel but i dont get any of the common symptoms like jerking, rattling, loss of power uphill etc. Nothing of that sort, all gears PRNDS change smoothly aswell. So what is that grinding noise? Only happens as soon as the engine has started then dissapears.
I have noticed that it happens most of the time when i start the car without letting the yellow sign (glow plug i think) go off. but when i turn the ignition on and wait a second for the yellow glow plug sign to go out and then start i hardly ever hear the noise.
I do know the timing belt is due in the next 6000 miles. Dont know if this plays a part. Any suggestions?

Mine was knocking on warms starts even when waiting for the glow plug light to go off. I saw the old flywheel after I had it replaced - definitely knackered.
If you're not getting the noise when you wait for the plug light to go out, erm, how do I say this.....WAIT FOR THE LIGHT TO GO OUT! :D:aargh4: And when the noise is there on all or warm starts, get it replaced. In the meantime, no noise = good news.
BTW, I'm not a qualified mechanic so my advice might be worth diddly squat.

Thanks for that. do you have the same tip auto 7speed? if so, how much did the flywheel replacement cost? i cant seem to find the flywheel as iv called and messaged many suppliers including Euro and parts4less ad they say as its a 7 speed auto its only a main dealer part, i called Audi and they shocked me till i dropped back in bed of a price of £950+vat & thats exluding labour!!!

Remember your car isn't tiptronic, it's multitronic so don't get confused mentioning tip!

Confused as have a 07 Tip and it only has 6 speeds...or are you counting reverse as one of the 7?

It's not. You refer to a timing belt so I can assume you're driving a 2.0? If so then it's definitely a multtronic and is a completely different gearbox to the tiptronic.

Yes its a 2.0tdi. And yes im sure its 7 speed. Even when driving in manual it shows 7 gears on the selector as also was mentioned by the parts companies i have contacted

Correct. Just making sure you weren't asking people about a tiptronic :)

OP, don't worry, I'd spotted the clues....2.0 + 7 speed = Multitronic. [emoji6]
I had mine replaced by an Indy using OEM parts and including a starter motor for about £950 all in.

Oh, and forgot to mention, don't worry about the tiptronic snobbery. My Multi's still going at 118k. [emoji12] [emoji6] [emoji41]
