I'm trying to get comfortable using the electronic oil level indicator, and in doing so have noticed the oil level dropping over time. I am checking it more often than the manual dipstick type, so I am probably noticing the changes more frequently, but it got me wondering what others oil usage is. I have a 2012 3.0d, with 32,000 miles and in 8,000 miles have used about 1/2 a litre. I can't be 100% certain it was full after the last service, but when I checked it, I was just over halfway on the scale. I topped it up, and its dropped one notch down from being full in 5,000 miles.

One issue with the electronic measurement you cant see if you have overfilled. Can a dip stick be retrofitted - the tube on the engine is there, but blanked off.

The dipstick can be retrofitted yes, check the forum and the web for part numbers.

In 30,000 miles the gauge in my 2.0 tdi has always shown full, same as in my previous C6 2.7 tiptronic . my wife's petrol 1.8 A3 however does use oil, but it only does short runs.

I've obtained the dipstick from the dealers that is listed on various other posts relevant for the 3.0 tdi. I have pulled the bung out of the dip stick tube and fitted. However over a few days I can not get a clean reading. Its as if the car is overfilled and the oil is up the dip stick tube, but I doubt that. Also with the dip stick fitted, the MMI read the oil was full, but previously was 2 blocks below full. Very odd, so I have removed for now.

I was wondering if the dip stick tube was meant to have a section on the top - a funnel I think is the terminology, that would lift the dip stick an inch to give a correct reading. Does anybody have the adjustable dip stick and would be able to take a measurement from the oil full position to the bottom of the adjustable stop for a 3.0 tdi?

thanks

From reading your previous posts and the fact that no one else has reported any problems with oil usage and that the MMI reading with the dipstick fitted shows full suggests to me that the fault may be with the electronic sensor. Given that there is a warning not to overfill with oil as this can cause major problems would lead me to get the level professionally checked pretty pronto.

For it to be overfilled, the dealer would have had to have done this, not unheard of I know. Also I provided the oil for the service, and received back the unused portion of the 2nd 4l oil can, so they would have had to add oil from elsewhere to do this.
