Hello,
My Avant has developed a strange rumbling sound and, although I know it's difficult to advise without seeing /hearing the vehicle, I wondered if there was perhaps a known problem that might cause it.
It seemed to appear following me removing and refitting the lh headlamp to replace the xenon bulb. I then washed the car and sprayed water with a hose under the wheel arches. This could of course be coincidence but I thought it best to mention what I'd done.
The sound is only audible above approximately 15 mph and the engine under load. It does not do it when stationary in neutral and revving the engine. I would describe it as a (don't laugh!) sound like making a constant brrr sound (like when you're cold!) and it appears to emanate from the front (although hard to tell for sure.
I do have the car booked in but Audi don't have a slot until next Wednesday.
Many thanks in advance,
Mark

Maybe the DMF? When was the gearbox and fluid last changed? How many miles are on the car?

Chris, thanks. Excuse the ignorance, but "DMF"?
The multitronic gearbox fluid was changed as per schedule (40000 if I recall correctly). The mileage is 65000.

I've just done another test drive: The note doesn't change with engine revs but does get a bit louder at speed- I tried it in sport , manual and auto. If I drop the car into neutral on a downhill, the note gradually fades, so is definitely dependent on engine load. The noise seems to transmit through the bulkhead as opening the windows makes no difference.

I'm thinking perhaps exhaust or manifold?
