Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster here - am the proud owner of a 2005 B6 Passat Estate, and found the dreaded oil warning light coming on the other day - was 100m from my house so coasted onto the drive and shut it down. So far so good.

Have done some digging, and the only fault code is an intermittent low boost pressure on turbo - suspect this is going to turn out to be a hose or a sticky vane actuator. Will worry about this one later once I've fixed the oil pressure, could it also be a symptom?

Starting the engine, the oil pressure light stays off at idle and stays off until about 1800RPM when it comes on. You can only clear this by shutting down and re-inserting key. I have obviously not done this repeatedly...

This is, as far as I know, on the right side of the balance shaft issue and will have a gear driven oil pump. I'm reticent to drop the sump just yet.

I'm thinking - is it worth flushing the engine and having a look to see if it's just been sludged up? then new filters/oil and hope for the best? or do we drop the sump & replace the hex drive as a precaution whilst we're at it.

Not an expert - enthusiastic amateur, and i think if it gets to taking bottom end of the engine off, I'll be getting a garage involved... can find a balance shaft assembly for £200 if I need to replace my one, but I'm worried I'll **** up the timing if I do it myself.

Any input much appreciated!

It will probably be the hex shaft / balance shaft hex rounded.
Just drop the sump and replace with remanufactured one or get yours done or do the 1.9 conversion.
Don't start it again!

Just out of interest how many miles has it done?

105k mate. Thanks for the input! My friend has a garage, so will get it recovered to him and ask him to fit it. As soon as we start getting into timing, I get very worried...

So, scores on the doors. The hex drive was rounded, so it's had the balance shaft re-machined. Crank Shaft was OK thankfully, and the rest of the engine looks fine. Turbo is goosed so that's been reconditioned. EPB packed up too, so it's had a new caliper (second one in a year, other side though).

Going to cost about £800 in total, so not as bad as it could be, but not really what you need before Christmas.

Humbug!
