Evening,

Right got the suspension sorted on the A6 all road now so start to investigate it further and noticed the revs are quite high at motorway speeds.

I have the Tiptronic box fitted and at 70mph it is 3000rpm but was expecting it to be lower. Does the tiptronic box have different ratios than manual etc?

Mine is a little later tiptronic, but it runs at about 2000rpm @ 70 mph...

Mine is a 1.9 c5 multitronic but at 75 mph it's just over 2000rpm so it sounds like yours is not getting top gear.

It definitely goes into top gear as that is exactly what I checked first of all and it moves up to gear 5 and drops RPM on every gear change as you would expect.

I was wondering if the 2.7T had ratios or diffs that caused the high RPM.

I would think it should be much the same as the rest of them, is the tip tonic not a 6 speed? I know the multitronic has six ratios but not sure about the tiptronic.

No its a 5 speed or should I say mine is a 5 speed but I assume the rest are. Mine was a very special order car from Audi by Audi UK and I would not be surprised if it differed from the norm as it is Red, colour coded, silver Recaros and almost every optional extra so was just interested in checking what other people were getting.

I also have the tiptronic box albeit in an A7, but at 70mph its literally on tick over, it sometimes doesn't shift into 8th gear until around 75 as it is literally ticking over.

Thanks for the replies.

I think the ratios will be different as the years have gone on and also the engine would have a big bearing on this.

I don't believe I have any issue as the history from Audi is huge and the car drives faultless but given the sporty nature of the ratios I wanted to see if this was the same as others with the 2.7T Tiptronic of that age (mine is a 52 plate)

I think ratios back then were geared for performance and these days extra gears are added to ensure you have performance and also good ratios for economy higher up.

I'm in ireland so correct me if I'm wrong but 52 plate is 2002??? If so it should definitely be far more relaxed at cruising speed than 300 pm, as well as the a6 I have a 98 toyota land cruiser and it will sit at 70 at 2500 r pm so the all road should definitely be lower than that.

You need to tell us your Engine, Gearbox and diff codes from the ID Label either in the service book or the label in the spare wheel bay.

Thanks Peter,

I have been out today and it is 100% working as it should so not a worry on that front but just was expecting the revs lower in top gear when cruising, although it is actually 2800 @ 70mph in 5th not 3000.

The codes are BES, ENY EYK, which are the relevant ones and the power is 184KW, with a gearbox designation of A5

2.800 at 70 for a petrol engine sounds fine. Regards Peter

Allow me to point out that the OP has a 2.7 Petrol not diesel thus the difference in the RPM's at 70 MPH. Regards Peter

Just some simple mathematics away from knowing if 2800 at 70 is right for your car ;)

I get sopmewhere around 2800 revs at 70 (maybe slightly lerss), but rev counters are notoriously cavalkier with their readings.....5% accuracy would be a good one, so it sounds like you haven't got a problem.

If it was much above 3000 at 70, you'd run out of revs before you hit the official top speed...

Just to put my twopenny worth in, I certainly wouldn't suggest there is anything wrong with your car but I have recently sold a '98 2.8 petrol quattro Avant with 5 speed Tiptronic auto which used to do 80mph (yes, 80 - that's not a typo) at just under 2500rpm. I have just replaced it with a late 2003 3.0 petrol quattro Avant, again with 5speed Tiptronic auto which also indicates just under 2500 on the tachometer at 80 mph. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Allroad is lower geared, certainly in the intermediate gears but don't see why top gear should be lower too.

Ametlib, I agree which is why I said thats the information I needed :)

Thanks Kid and it compares to yours which is fine and after running through all the information I am happy its fine. I am more used to cars being much lower at 80mph so just needed the information to double check.
