Ok i am using Elsawin and VCDS to adjust timing however i have some problems with what Elaswin states and what i have encountered.

I get the engine up to temp then using VCDS i go to engine settings and group 4, then i switch to 'basic setting' which makes the engine change sounds. Then i look at VCDS when it cylces through late and early and expect to 0% and 100% in the last box (cold start valve) when it cycles but it only moves between 15% and 85% (cold start valve)

What is this and why is it not opening and closing fully? Is it thE EGR valve?

Can i still do the timing with these values?

The late cycle shows ATDC value of 5 moves up and down slightly between 4.6 and 5.2 which i belive should be around 2

The early cylce shows ATDC value of 12 ish

Am i getting false readings from the ATDC because the Cold start valve is not opening and closing fully?

Thanks people

I had a go at this recently having replaced my fuel pump... I followed the Ross tech guidance for VCDS and despite being a novice I'm sure it's spot on! Car runs great and like you it's a BDG. TDIGraph - TDI Timing Checker (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-scope/TDIGraph.html)
