View Full Version : Question What are these two things?

I have two unidentified things on my pre-facelift ultra, and hope someone can tell me what they are...

1. I have the standard heating controls - just to the bottom right of the fan speed control knob there is a button. What does this do?

2. Under the boot floor towards the rear seats there is an oval plastic trim. I can remove this to reveal an oval metal plate. What is this?

Many thanks!
Rob

1 ejector seat control
2 where your seat belt anchorage was before you pressed 1!

You got pictures to help us work it out?

1. Have found a picture of the heater fan control - hopefully just visible in bottom left of shiny square with fan knob.

2. Currently have dog box fitted in boot, but will photograph when I get a chance.

Are you on about the picture of a car with an arrow inside it (underneath the front heater button)? That circulates air around the inside of the car and doesn't bring fresh air in to the cabin. Great if driving through smoke or somewhere you know there are smells you don't want in the cabin but I find after a while it steams the car up.

Oops no - sorry meant bottom right (not left!) within the shiny square with the fan knob. I think it's only just visible in the picture if you know where it is. It is just a small round button about 6mm in diameter. Will try and take a better photo.

Oh yeah I can see it now. No idea I'm afraid.

Been discussed many time here and elsewhere. Although no one is 100% certain, consensus says it is a temperature sensor for the AC system.

I think the oval plate is to get access to the fuel tank (level sensor and/or pump)

It's a webcam that links to a dodgy Russian website via your data SIM - a sort of update of those bugs they had in every transistor radio in the 70s. :)

Pushed mine once and it creaked...

VAG docs describe it as infra-red temperature and sunlight penetration sensor ...

Given its location not sure how much sunlight it actually sees!

There is a sunlight penetration photosensor ( G107 ) located on dash near main defroster vent.

Why they have one also on the A/C control unit also I :dunno: .

All it states is "Determines the temperature and sunlight penetration on the operating unit. If the infrared sensor is concealed or contaminated, it can no longer supply correct measured values and the air conditioner will not be regulated properly".

If sensor fail it states "Combined with operating unit as one component, cannot be renewed separately".

Thanks for the useful info. Seems strange to me that there would be a temp sensor in the middle when each side is independently controlled, but seems to work ok!

There are 4 temps sensors in the a/c ducting for front dash vents and footwells, basic & deluxe a/c unit.

There are also 4 temps sensors in the a/c ducting 2 for the rear console vents and 2 for the rear footwell vents these are only on the deluxe unit.

... and you can actually see this in action on the 4 zone AC if you bring the fan settings up on the MMI. On a day when you are driving with hot sunshine on one side of teh car and not the other you will see that the fan(s) on that side of the car are turned up a notch or two compared with the other side.
