Hi all,

I'm new to the forums but I'm hoping you might be able to help me. I have a friend who is a mechanic and, specifically, used to be a VW mechanic. Due to his unerring friendship and help, both me and my wife are driving around in VWs - I've got the 2.3 v5 Passat and she's got the 2.8 v6 Bora. He's always helped us out and when I bought the missus her Bora we gave him our old mk3 Golf GTi. Tragically, it conked out shortly after he got it and he spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out what's wrong. He managed to figure out that the ECU was up the spout and needed replacing. This is where you guys come in, hopefully...

I have the part number (5WP4 256 037906025R) and I've found a couple on ebay but I know that the immobiliser is going to be an issue for him. I've been searching these and other forums for an answer. I'm trying, if possible, to buy him a replacement ECU as a surprise so he can get on and drive the Golf around again. If I get him one from ebay, he's going to need to get things (I'm not quite clear on what) reprogrammed to work. However, I found a post on here about getting an ECU with the 'immobiliser defeated'. Hopefully, this is as obvious as it sounds - someone has tinkered with the ECU so it doesn't care about the immobiliser.

1) What would need to be done if I got a replacement 'standard' ECU for him?
2) Where would I get an immobiliser defeated ECU?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give! http://www.vwvortex.com/Anthony/Smilies/smile.gif

Cheers,
Richard.
