Hi All, I'm new here so please forgive me if I'm posting this question in the wrong place. I've recently purchased a 2008 VW Passat Highline 1.9tdi, I left it into main dealer recently for a service and mentioned to them that there was a slight knocking noise coming from front passenger side suspension on bumpy roads, no issue with excessive or uneven tyre wear, they told me I need a new steering rack. I'm not convinced about this as the car drives perfectly with no steering issues whatsoever, infact the steering is very responsive , just a slight shudder in steering wheel at 75+mph. Can anyone shed any light on what might be the problem even if it is to confirm I need a new steering rack......many thanks in advance.

From past experience on other cars (non VW) it could be track rod end, suspension bush, loose shock, worn bushes and lastly a steering rack itself. Take it somewhere else and don't mention the main dealer diagnosis.

Cheers vespa, I have it booked into a local independent guy he's gonna have a look on tuesday, I'll let you know his diagnosis. He has done work for me before on other cars and I've found him straight up and dependable

I've the same issue with a slight knock on d/s, checked everything including strut, top mount all bushes and trackrods and there is play in the rack. Did you get a resolution
