2001 passat radio fault

my radio casstte has stopped lighting up since having it valleted the lcd works and it plays ok,also the outer heater vents light up but not the inner ones any ideas where too start ?

They haven't knocked the dimmer control while they have been cleaning the car, have they? Try moving the dimmer control up and down a few times and see if they come back on.

Did any of the dash lights brighten & dim when you operated the control? Does the glovebox light work? What about the number plate lights?
If the glovebox & No. plate lights are working then it looks like the dimmer control is faulty. You could confirm that by bypassing the dimmer and see if that brings the dash lights back on.

OK, I give in:)

I had a quick scan of the wiring diagram and all the vents are supplied power and get their earths via a common splice in the dash wiring, so there isn't any reason why the center vents wont light up when the outer ones do.
The radio illumination is supplied from a separate splice and the earth for those bulbs must be OK because the radio is working. Basically, according to the diagram, there isn't anything common to the illumination that isn't working that isn't also connected to the things that are.

I'd remove the radio and check the illumination supply wire (grey/blue) and see if it has 12V on it (side lights on & dimmer on full bright).
