Depends on the year and transmission.

Mine is 2006 & automatic transmission, for example. I'm trying to do a comparison to here in Ireland where it is over €1400 euro per year to tax mine.

06s are the higher tax band of £485 I think.

If you re-register it in the UK and drive it in Ireland and revenue find out they'll make you pay the duty again or confiscate the car. ( they did it to me )

Tut tut tut. Surely if you own a house in the North and register the car there then can they still fine you?

It's not my intention to re-reg it. I'm just wondering by how much am I being ripped-off by compared to a reasonable tax rate for the same car in the UK. Considering our road surfaces here are appalling compared to the UK I'm failing to see how they can justify the €1400 I have to pony up. Of course they don't have to justify it though.

I bought a Golf 6 years ago it was Belfast reg, I used my sisters address in Northern Ireland. One day revenue were dipping diesel tanks. When they got to me they asked me if I had any ID and I handed over my Irish licence. I had to pay €1500.00 and re register the car. I don't like revenue

As far as the government is concerned they have pulled down your metaphorical trousers and tied you to the bonnet

I think the irish law states that if you have a car in the country for more than six months then you need to re-register it.
I know of 2 people you had to do so one was caught out by her kids when the garda lady asked them where they lived.

That's correct dan2485. Mine is originally an Irish car so was registered in 2006 by the first owner here. Your tax in the UK for the same car is less than half what I am paying.

I was just stupid I could have given him my UK passport. I was 2 miles from the address on the licence. He probably got a bonus for such an easy scoop
