Hi guys,

I have a problem with the Instrument Cluster menu in the MMI unit, it is greyd out and I cannot enter it.

Anyone have an idea of what could be wrong, maybe some VCDS programming?

Car info edit;

A6 c6 2009 2.0 tdi 170hp with MMI 3G but red DIS with computer (showing standard screen with fuel range)

I see that I have a small 1 top left of fuel range also.

Regards,
Tomas:dunno:

Tomas

You have to be specific.

1) Has it always been the same?
2) How long ago did it start?
3) Have you had any recent work done on your car?
4) Do you have VCDS?
5) Does your radio/CD player work?

Typically if greyed out you don't have those options, if all of it is and wasn't previously sounds like a major fault but nothing that'll affect it being driven.

Hi mark!

I didn't have it before, trying to retrofit.

Maybe missed something in VCDS?

Did the coding part in 17 and steering wheel, haven't done any adaption tho. .but activated instrument cluster in hidden menu.

MMI 2G or 3G?

3g

I take it you have replaced the can-gateway, and removed all the component protection. I've also retrofited MMI 3G into my A6 and the instrument cluster option works fine. So it must be down to a coding issue on one of the modules. Can you post a VCDS scan of your car.

tomaslund

I haven't retro fitted 3G only DIS :)

tomaslund

Everything works fine, except instrument cluster menu... don't have access to PC right now :(

I take it you have gone from the red DIS to colour.

tomaslund
22-10-2014, 06:25 AM
Not even that, just put the stalk in with reset button 😄 had the stalk without before.

I have the red DIS, but the colour radio MMI 3G, and just trying to retrofit the stalk :)

Programming done in VCDS is instrument coding and steering wheel, but haven't done any adaption tho because don't know which channel etc..

Maybe that's what's wrong, don't you think? [emoji15]

Tomas, please don't rely on others being psychic or having read your previous threads, state the full facts up front, otherwise it just wastes everyone's time:(

You definitely purchased the one with computer control? If state your year and engine size and perhaps forum members with the same can offer there coding for you to try...although I appreciate there may be small 'country specific' variants due to most forum members being UK based.

MarkTM, yeah sorry about that. Multi tasking when posting does not end up that we'll. Will update my first post with car info.

To be fair I'm a bit shocked on this one, it's the first time I've ever hear of an A6 without full DIS, I didn't even know it was an option. In the UK I think you either got full red DIS or colour. That's why I wrongly assumed you retrofitted MMI 3G...

I take it you can now switch between computer 1 & 2 and see all the other options in the DIS?

tomaslund
22-10-2014, 08:16 AM
I know it's..

Yeah, just the Instrument Cluster menu that doesn't work, so I can't change the info 😕

B5NUT
22-10-2014, 08:47 AM
So you cannot switch between the computers using the stalk?

B5NUT

Well it sound like the steering wheel control module is not correct, on the A4 there were highline and lowline versions, lowline not having the DIS option (not sure if that is applicable on the A6) what is the part number of your steering wheel control module, you can find that information using vcds.

tomaslund
22-10-2014, 10:36 AM
I will look into this when I got time, lot on my plate right now lol. But when coding in VCDS I get what is installed, and the steering wheel module was programmable to use the DIS comp, but still my question is do I need to change any adaption channel in Instrument or SteeringWheel or is it enough with only programming? Because if it is only programming I might need to check the functionality of the stalk since I bought it used from a crashed car. But first I want to correctly program everything and see if it works. :)

You have any idea? Is it the same programming of Adaption as for A4 found in the thread which explains retrofit DIS & Cruisecontrol on A4?

Kind Regards,
Tomas

No idea bout the adaption as it's not listed on the ross tech wiki. So as long as you have changed the coding Audi A6 (4F) Steering Wheel Electronics - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A6_(4F)_Steering_Wheel_Electronics#Coding) then it should work, but the module may except the coding but the software to run the DIS my not be present in your module.

Steering elec.module only one type, item 4 this diagram Link:- AUDI A6/AVANT [A6] (EUROPE) 2009: ELECTRICS: 95350. STEERING COLUMN SWITCH; AND TRIM (http://www.partsbase.org/audi/audi-a6-avant-a6-eu-2009-95350-steering-column-switch-and-trim/)

Now when you say I enabled via hidden menu car you post screen shots of what you did?

In hidden menu select car, then carmenuoperation, for instrument cluster do you have a 5 there?

Maybe I need to update MMI version??

Gupsterg, yes it is set to 5 in hidden menu.. :/

It's not just the MMI that is not working as, he states he cannot switch between the dis options using the stalk. #15 & #16

B5NUT

Maybe I need to update MMI version??

All versions of the MMI 3G software be it the HDD or the DVD version support DIS.

It's not just the MMI that is not working as, he states he cannot switch between the dis options using the stalk. #15 & #16

Yes I understand, I was just trying to findout what the car menu operation was set to :).

So there is no differing version of steering elec.module so all must support stalk/coding change for DIS?

There is no differing stalks, we know that in the 2009-11 range the standard A6 (the model below SE) with MMI 3G Radio plus does have stalk with DIS function as there are UK cars with it.

I've also checked PR codes relating to instrument clusters and all support onboard/check control.

So Thomas in CAR > CARDEVICELIST > On Board Computer is checked?

B5NUT
22-10-2014, 01:16 PM
If all the coding is correct the only thing I can think of is there is a lowline factory SCSM and if you have to replace this module you get the model listed in etka (complete wild guess) as for some reason neither the MMI or the stork can communicate to the DIS.

Without a scan of the car I'm now stumped.

tomaslund
22-10-2014, 03:54 PM
Gup, on board is not checked! But isn't that for the display of Climate settings, that one I don't have. Basic turner wheels to adjust climate.

I will try to get a scan as soon as I can, but won't be until the weekend I guess. :(

gupsterg
22-10-2014, 04:27 PM
AFAIK

carmenuoperation is for selection of menus/how/when displayed
cardevicelist is what installed

air condition refers to climate control

Please check onboard computer and reboot MMI and report back.

tomaslund

Gupsterg , couldn't find any on board computer just something called "bord computer" the exact spelling.

This is weird I will post a scan soon

Sorry all out of ideas :Blush2: , if the VCDS lead is genuine you maybe able to get help from Ross Tech, they give good support info via email or register on the Ross Tech Forum and post thread.

Does this DTC clear or keep coming back?

tomaslund

Wow haven't even seen that one... probably new after changing the stalk. Might be the problem?? Will try to reset the dtc and see if it works, otherwise the stalk is crap I guess?

The fault above has only appeared once, so clear the fault and see if it comes back.

Have you coded your instrument cluster? Looking at the ross-tech site that also requires coding.

Gauge Test/Needle Sweep active
Driver Information System (DIS) active

In earlier post Thomas stated he'd coded steering and ins.cluster that's why I started querying 5F setup.

Perhaps the wiper DTC is red herring, but like u say he's gotta clear and check again.

Thomas do all the functions on wiper stalk after DTC clear, then rescan. You can check measuring blocks in steering module for functionality of stalk.

I've coded 17, 16 and 5F.

Will try to reset dtc and see if it comes back. But in this stage I probably think the stalk is broken some how, it's bought of a crashed car so there is no guarantee of fully working. ://

So your coding for module 16 breakdown

0 X X X X X X : Blank
X 0 X X X X X : Left-hand drive
X X 0 X X X X : Without electrical steering column adjustment and/or with manual steering column adjustment, without lane keeping assistant
X X X 2 0 X X : Multi-function steering wheel (no Tiptronic on steering wheel, not heated)
X X X X X 4 X : On-board computer, CCS
X X X X X X 2 : Avant (rear window wiper)

Module 17 & 5F long coding I have no info to double check :Blush2: , perhaps you can post so screen shots of long coding helper or you can use FastStone capture to do screen video.

Sorry I missed that.

I'm stumped on this one. It's strange that neither the stork or the MMI can control/access the DIS, as my car is a pre-facelift I cannot check the coding, and the VCDS label files are now encrypted so it's difficult to check to see if there are any adaptation that could help. Is there anything in the can-gateway we could have missed?

You could contact ross-tech they may be able to help.

It's super weird, I mean I should be able to use instrument cluster in MMI even if the stalk is broken, wouldn't I?

For the A4 B6 &b7 you need to do adaption in 17 channel 19, but this is only remote clock in c6 :/

Also there's no adaption for bord comp in 17 -instruments.

To get support on a used cable you have to pay a fee, I think it's $99.

I take it you have been into the measuring blocks on the steering wheel module to check the function of the stork.

tomaslund
26-10-2014, 07:41 AM
Yeah I know , and I really don't feel like paying 99$ for one question :p

I think I did, will retry again and see. Delete dtc and retry measure block.. later today

... Is there anything in the can-gateway we could have missed?

I can't see any option relating to it in my coding, I know its not good comparative as MMI 2G car vs 3G but the CAN gateway is more concerned with modules IMO.

On here they do show 5F so if there was a MMI 3G differing option they would have it? Link:- http://www.audi-portal.com/en/diagnostic/ecu_12638.html#1

Would have thought menu should work, sorry have not the experience to really say :Blush2:.

For the A4 B6 &b7 you need to do adaption in 17 channel 19, but this is only remote clock in c6 :/

On the 2004-08 A6 range it would have been a code change in modules 16 and 17 plus adaptation in module 07. In 2009-11 range module 07 don't exist in a manner of speaking and module 5F would be where change required.

Regarding support from Ross - tech I can't get since I bought a used one :/

When I registered on RT forum they verified only that it's a genuine cable by the serial/license key, click about button in VCDS.

Hi Thomas!

I may have solution to your problem! :beerchug: ...

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26020&stc=1

I hope this helps :D , so access hidden menu, select car, select carprotocolswitch, then uncheck Bord computer ...

Please report back :) ...

Hu gup! So I need to disable it in hidden menu then what do I need to do in 5F ? Disable it there too?

Thank so much for helping me,

gupsterg
30-10-2014, 02:24 PM
Do not change anything else in 5F via VCDS, only do the the hidden menu stuff as I've written in post 44.

I will explain after you report back.

Thanks.

tomaslund

Okej 😆

But it will need to be active in the other menu in hidden menu right ? Carmenuoperation?

gupsterg
30-10-2014, 02:57 PM
You need coding in steering module which you have.

You need coding in instrument cluster which you have as you stated this.

Then in hidden menu you need:-

CAR > CARDEVICELIST > Bord Computer is checked that tell 5F you have onboard computer

CAR > CARMENUOPERATION > Instrument cluster set to 5 to make 5F show Instrument cluster menu

CAR > CARPROTOCOLSWITCH > Bord computer need to be unchecked or it grey out menu, got it from french audi forum.

What you're doing in hidden menu is what can be done via long coding of 5F in VCDS.

Here is image concerning 5F long coding.

It maybe that the instrument cluster (module 17) need more coding.

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26028&stc=1
The underlined bytes/bits caught my eye, can you check via VCDS what is in module 17 long coding, if you install even the free version of Link:- FastStoneCapture (http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm) you can make a video of your VCDS screen and upload to youtube and post and members can view/comment.

Please read this thread carefully, looks like the steps I've outlined in post 48 is all that is required.

Original Swedish thread Link:- NA Forum - Där ser man. *** hade en meny som heter (http://www.nordicaudi.com/php/forum/showflat.php?d=f&Cat=&Board=A6mk2&Number=1196401&page=0&view=expanded&sb=9)

And translated one for all the rest of us! Link:- Google Translate (http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=sv&u=http://www.nordicaudi.com/php/forum/showflat.php%3Fd%3Df%26Cat%3D%26Board%3DA6mk2%26Nu mber%3D1196401%26page%3D0%26view%3Dexpanded%26sb%3 D9&prev=search)

Perhaps the stalk having a fault is creating issue but really don't know.

Did you do checks like highlighted in Link:- post 35 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?161901-Instrument-Cluster-in-MMI-menu-greyd&p=927557#post927557)

Great help gupsterg!! Thanks a lot, I think I got a stick that's not working. I will talk to the vendor and see if I can change the stick, he told me they didn't know the functionality of the stalk since they just got it in from a crashed car.. got it cheap but will probably return it and get a tested one!

Thanks a lot man! I will do the last checks before returning.. measure, reset dtc and check long coding in 17. :) I'll tell you how it goes
