Hi guys.

I own a 2001 A4 1.8T QS which had/has a couple of issues. I have a garage a few streets down which is run by an experienced VW/Audi technician. I had the car with him a couple of times and am generally very happy with his work. There is an issue with my cockpit computer (No clue how it is actually called). When I had it with him the first time the display had almost died. well, it had slight pixel issues before but they were at least twice as bad as it came back. A few weeks back I then brought it in for a service and when I got it back the entire display was dead. It would not come back on except that it will show you when a door is open, provided the ignition is turned on. When I brought it in this week I mentioned it to him and he said something along the lines it is the pixels. He then, however, reverted that statement after he saw it would come on when opening a door. He did not fix it though. Anyone any idea wht it is and what I can do to "restart" it?

He also replaced the offside top suspension arms and the breaks all round. Since then there is a weird noise coming from the steering when turning the wheel. I am currently unable to bring it back to him due to work commitments. Has anyone any idea what that could be?

Thanks in advance.

a very common problem. you can buy a new display for 60 notes or so and fit it yourself, or send it to bba. the weird noise could be anything, how weird is it. i am sure he will sort it when you can get it to him.

AUDI VW VAG DIS FIS MFA DISPLAY FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HIGH END QUALITY | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-VW-VAG-DIS-FIS-MFA-DISPLAY-FOR-INSTRUMENT-CLUSTER-HIGH-END-QUALITY-/141128054306?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20dbe33622)

this is the part that is needed. just luck it failed more at a garage, nothing unusual about that.

Funnily enough, it was just turned off. Didn't realise you can switch them off? Oh well, the screen is buggered anyway. Half of the pixels wont work no more. As for the noise, it is like a knocking noise when turning the wheel when stationary. It has not done it before and I am a little confused. Thought it might be something as common as the screen which I knew is a common problem. Speaking of which, how easy are they to replace?

not easy, the dash has to come out, easy, then be stripped, and the new board micro soldered into place. knocking noise could be a lot of things really. best to get it looked at.

In that case it stays the way it is. Shame really as it only has 97k on the clock. Eyeballing a S4 Avant anyway :). Thanks for your input. Need to see if I can do that before my business trips...
