Guys, today drove 200 yards and everything shut down. (

Luckily some good Samaritans helped me push to safety, walked home with kids & got laptop and scanned/cleared but runs for 5 secs before loss of all power to wheels..engine revs and DIS shuts down.

Thoughts on getting car working as have just started new job, only change to electrics has been fitting LED sidelights, have to make a late dinner for kids and get them to bed before 9...would be great to read some suggestions when I return

i would think that the regulator on the alternator has failed.

Wow, that's a lot of errors, however it seems the recurring one is an over voltage fault so leads me to believe there is a problem with the electrics. When did you change the indicators to LEDs? If it was recent I would guess that your fault is there, however that is an awful lot of errors for an indicator bulb.

Dan, brand new regulator fitted 2 months ago. Could it be that alt is producing too much? Battery also is 2 months old. Would think that the battery regulator would ensure that correct voltage is transferred!

Mitchy no bulb fault, hard to believe that such a low wattage change would result in the faults :(

Yeah I honestly don't think it is the bulbs but as you said you changed then it's all I can think of.

No damp / wet patches anywhere?

be wary of running the car if its not regulating the voltage.

you would ideally need to pull most of the fuses to the MMI and other electronic items unless they can protect themselves with current/voltage limiting.

then run quickly to see what being put in to the battery.

Potentially a new voltage regulator needed as a minimum :(

Too dark to check around battery or plenium for damp.

Will check connections around MAF which was the only electrical connector touched when removed airbox for fitting sidelight.

Is that regulator you fitted genuine? IIRC was it an aftermarket equivalent?

Surely the job of the battery regulator is to stop overvoltage reaching the delicate electrical components?

We did have some quite torrential rain her today, so am wondering if I've driven through a puddle and affected something? :(

Would have thought so as it's a regulator! LOL

I got nothing against buying non genuine part as long as it's branded, say for instance I knew throttle made by VDO for my car so bought that vs genuine one but when I viewed your link in regulator thread it didn't come across as Valeo part? did it have any branding?

At present I've succumbed to :alcoholic and as I'm not doing school run tomorrow will enjoy some scifi tv with my inebriated state :D and back to haunt this forum tomorrow! LOL

A short in the regulator will cause overcharging. Also check all leads on battery, earth leads and b+ on alternator etc.for loose or poor contact.

Alan, thank you will check out once have walked kids to school, car is parked safely half a mile from home.

In the absence of anything obvious will call out a local mechanic and get him to change the regulator over.

Hi Mark,

Checked those DTC's in program linked in my sig and all explanations are:-

i) check voltage
ii) check battery
iii) check generator/regulator
iv) MVB's for above items

In one of the explanations it stated if DTC in multiple modules regulator is issue.
Even though your regulator only recently done perhaps has developed fault?

Anyway hope it solves issue and hope to hear you have a happy running A6 ASAP.

Went to car 15 mins ago and everything is dead, even had to manually unlock and had to use pin to get the ignition key out again!

So either battery is flat or a fuse blown somewhere. Will try and get the replacement battery and see if a difference just to get it home would be good :(

Right, managed to get it started from jumping from my standby battery, as only drivers door would open had to manhandle the battery (and myself) over from the front seats to the rear.

Started, cleared DTC and it gives me about 15 seconds of power before everything shuts down, so managed to limp home with 5 DTC clears.

There is definately smoke from the front of the car directly above the alternator so looks as though I need a new one :(

A neighbour is dropping me to a place 10 miles away with my old alternator and original Valeo regulator, they charge £35 to rebuild it so am going with that option and will get it fitted on Monday.

Carless for the weekend though :aargh4:

By way of an update.

Got old alternator (changed in August) refurbed at a local place and original regulator was fried and slip rings excessively worn, regulator changed (with a new from Bosch despite being a Valeo alternator.....not worried as both OEM)

Also realised that failure when heated seats turned on (son was in football kit and didn't want him to freeze).

Just rescanned and now getting under-voltage DTC where previously over-voltage.

Car now on ramps waiting until Monday when mobile mechanic is fitting refurbed alternator.

By way of an update (and closing this thread) I had my original (repaired) alternator fitted to the car today, after it had new slip rings and a new regulator installed.

Ebay alternator that came off and it had a failed rectifier and brushes, which meant that any battery fitted would drain in 24hrs and lead to the overvoltage experienced.

No fault codes now and idle is not as high (but that may be from cleaning air intake alloy pipe.

So my message to anyone with an alternator failure is to get it diagnosed and repaired by a local specialist (usually a battery centre) rather than buying another one off ebay.

I may still get the defunct alternator repaired if economic and list on ebay crucially with a 3 month warranty

Just catching up on this thread, you were very lucky orAudi electronics are pretty well protected, a failed rectifier if it goes short circuit would let 3 phase AC onto the cars DC supply....ouch mucho ouch

Bringing this up as I get the same DTC error P0563 (Over voltage) as my car gone dead three times the last week while in D at standby. I changed the battery two days ago as the previous one was eight years old but the car had the same "blackout" yesterday. Car starts up fine after I turn off the ignition key and back on.
I'm going to change the regulator of the alternator as a next step and would like to know if you had to remove the front bumper to change the regulator?

Had the regulator of the alternator changed today with a Valeo one (Valeo nr 593780 at €65,00 locally) Audi local dealer wanted €115,00. Car somehow drives better now like it's been released some extra power.
