Hi all,
just fitted the DAB and AMI units to my Allroad. It was running a later software (5150), so the units appeared straight away. The DAB came straight on and is just waiting for me to finish the aerial connections. The AMI module however comes up as selectable, but nothing I plug into it seems to work or charge. It just says "this item my not be connected properly or may not be working correctly. Is there a chance that something still needs to be turned on with VAGCOM. I did update to 5570 as well just to be sure, but discs one and two didn't need to update anything as the bits for the various updates on there all said no update required, latest installed. Only disc therefore was disc three which took it to 5570 which went fine but made no difference to AMI.
I tried wiring it without any splitters in place of the CD changer, and again, it comes up, but no go. Tried a phone and three types of iPods, but nothing.
Any advise gladly received.
Thanks all.

What AMI lead are you using? ie P/N or IIRC colour band on lead?
Muppet_man

Do you mean the interface lead from AMI to device? In which case it is an iPod lead (older style) which came with it like the one here - For Audi VW AMI MMI Audio Cable Adaptor Interface Lead Connector For iPod iPhone | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Audi-VW-AMI-MMI-Audio-Cable-Adaptor-Interface-Lead-Connector-For-iPod-iPhone-/251610914749?pt=UK_MP3_Player_Accessories_Cables_A dapters&hash=item3a952ddfbd). It does not have any identifying writing or manufacturers part numbers on it or any colour bands of any sort. The leads in the back are simply a power splitter lead and a splitter optical lead.
Thanks again.

fake cable, get a genuine one. They're about £20.

Try powering off and then restarting the iPod whilst it is connected to the AMI

Thanks for the suggestion. Gave it a try, but no go. I think the clue may be in the fact that it doesn't charge either. So it's not just not seeing an iPod, it also is not giving it any feed.
I've also just ordered a genuine lead, so will see if that makes any difference.

Sorry for delayed reply but the thread had been moved sections and I didn't view updates in inbox :o.
Where you got the power/optical cable not matter as long as connected correctly and work.
Why I ask about colour bands is that IIRC MMI 3G AMI cables have them and I don't think they work with MMI 2G AMI.
Genuine cable will have P/N sticker and my AMI USB cable also have MITSUMI stamp on metal plug which go to AMI socket.

Hi,thanks for the reply. Just received a new one from an online seller. Audi original lead with a blue collar part number: 4F0 051 510 K - photo included. It has come of the same numbers, but I notice the IC number is different also.Plugged it in, but sadly no charging and when you select the input, it says the same thing "your device may not be connected or operating properly"I will check with Audi in the morning to see if the 510 K is an updated version of 510 Q.Other than that my only things left are the AMI is buggered, which seems unlikely, or the system requires something turned on with a VACOM, but as it see's the AMI and DAB straight away, seems unlikely. Thanks again.

You don't need the AMI coded, 510K is the one I use in my A3 without issues.

MMI 2G is 4F0 051 510 L Link:- AUDI A6/AVANT [A6] (EUROPE) 2005 [4F-5-000 001 >>]: ACCESSORIES, INFOTAINMENT: 05746. MMI 3G is 4F0 051 510 K Link:- AUDI A6/AVANT [A6] (EUROPE) 2009: ACCESSORIES, INFOTAINMENT: 05746. Again IIRC from what posts I've read MMI2G not like 3G cables but not entirely sure but your VAG dealer can verify if L does supersede to K.
4F0 051 510 L in EPC I use does not supersede to K, what EPC I use is not what I've linked in post.

Now what works for Chris beware is a 2009 A3, and K is what he should use in what I checked plus on the web Link:- AUDI A3/S3/SPORTBACK/QU. [A3] (EUROPE) 2009: ACCESSORIES, INFOTAINMENT: 05746. GENUINE ACCESSORIES; CONNECTION FOR EXTERNAL; AUDIO SOURCES; USB HARD-DRIVE; USB MEMORY STICK; ADAPTER

but I notice the IC number is different also.
Yes IC number differ as mine is AMI USB cable not AMI iPod/iPhone and like Chris state AMI not need coding to work but does tidy car's coding setup if done. You may have noted in my AMI retrofit guide at first I didn't have correct wiring setup to designate AMI as media player 2 whilst having AMI & CD changer fitted and it didn't cause any malfunction in use.

Do you know anyone with an Audi that has AMI (the Mk 6 Golf also uses the same cable if has the Media Interface fitted). You could then validate if the cable works or not. The dealer might let you try it in a car they have in on the site if you ask nicely

Why would this work? Link:- AMI (Audi Music Interface) – Cable Compatability Music | I Am Audi (http://www.iamaudi.com/ami-audi-music-interface-cable-compatability/)
So as highlighted in link you must have had lastest firmware in your AMI for K cable to work otherwise a K cable in MMI 2G AMI with older FW you get error message.
@Muppet_man only way to do AMI FW update is via USB stick/cable, link in post one of this thread active, Link:- Important ami update online DOWNLOAD (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?73921-ami-update-online-DOWNLOAD)

I went to Audi today and they were able to confirm that 510 K was for an Audi Allroad, but they said it was for models from 2008 to 2010, which I suspect means 3G versions and not a 2G like mine. The stores did show 510 K as an updated part for a 510 L, but not for the years 2006 to 2007. It simply says that 510 L is for older iPod classic and older iPods but not iPhone compatible.
The compatibility chart you kindly gave the link for was quite interesting although strangely, as you point out, it seems to say that the 510 K could be used with the 2G system if a software update is done. However I already have the latest version, so sadly that doesn't really help. I take it that by software they mean the same as firmware. I guess I could run the update discs again, but I doubt they would do anything since they have no items that come up with 'require update' letter. So it won't really install anything. It does say that - CAUTION: Consumer SW-update for the 2G AMI-MOST units are only possible with 2G AMI SW > 700 , however I'm not really sure I know what that means.

Thanks for the link, I've downloaded the file, and will have to order a USB lead and give it a try. Although of course, if the USB lead doesn't work, I won't be able to load the new firmware!

Sadly they didn't have a car on site that would fit the bill.
Once again guys, thanks very much for all of your input. Hopefully I will get to the bottom of this eventually. :dunno:

My daily drive is a VW Crafter, SWMBO drives the A6. The DAB keeps her entertained, I can post u my USB lead, as long as u resend after use.
IIRC my AMI was latest firmware/software and thus the linked file did nothing but I will check my VCDS logs as to what FW/SW in my AMI tomorrow afternoon as busy in morning.

That is a very kind offer, however I found one on E-Bay last night with the same Q part number as yours for a fiver, so I've ordered it and hopefully will receive it soon. How do you check the firmware of the AMI?
Thanks for your time.

Mine's version 850 firmware, besides VCDS log to see version/info you maybe able to see it in hidden menu (green/service) you can see SW/HW part numbers in log, hardware version is H20. It also shows as media player 2 due to be doing the wiring mod/coding as per the AMI retro guide I posted in how to section.

Hi,
I'm going out to see if I can look at those details without a VCDS as I don't have one. I have a Snap on Verus and an Ultra as well as an Omintec Pro, but frustratingly you can't do that with any of them!
I haven't done the mod with the wire, but since I've tried the unit on its own without the CD in place, I guessed this would not be the reason for the malfunction.
Roll on my USB lead arriving.
Thanks

It looks like mine is a very much older unit. The 4E0 035 785 part number doesn't end in 'K' like yours, and the version number of V170 and software of H09 seem to be much older. Maybe this is the issue? I hope it is able to take the USB update! Hopefully the lead will arrive tomorrow.

Mine is an F, there is no K, succession history:-
4E0 035 785 > 4E0 035 785 B > 4E0 035 785 C > 4E0 035 785 D > 4E0 035 785 F
If it doesn't take update then you just need the cable ending in L rather than K.
Did you buy used or new AMI?

Sorry, typo. I meant to say F.
If it's an old one like that I won't be able to fit the newer phone to it or the bluetooth interface for music that turbo_herbie on e-bay which will be a shame. If it doesn't appear to update and work, I may have to get a later one now I've gone this far.

I will try to fish out my MMI 5570 update disc set to view files/structure but looks like MMI updates do reflash AMI :D.
SO if you have your discs to hand try running again :D , as I understand you did 5570 flash before AMI retro? even though you had 5150 MMI you had no AMI from factory/then so would not have had update to AMI.
Link:- From this webpage (http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.martin-fischer.org/Audi-MMI/Audi-MMI-Software-Update/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Daudi%2Bami%2Bmmi%2B2g%2Bupdate%26star t%3D10%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26channel%3Dsb%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D64 7)
MMI FW 4220 update flashes AMI from v170 to v700 , MMI 5150 update flashes it to 840.
Now if memory serve me correct disc one of the 5570 set is MMI 5150 as that is minimum before other discs out of set can be used perhaps that will take v170 to 840?
The meddling continues! :D
Muppet_man

I did do the discs after, but I only put them in, since it said that there were no updates required on disc one and two, I didn't actually run them. The only disc that said it wanted to do anything was disc three, which took it from 5150 to 5570. I didn't do anything else.
To run them again, do you just ask it to upgrade even though it says it doesn't need it, or do you need to check some boxes?
I am beholding to you for all of this advise. If you ever need a favour back, don't hesitate to ask.

A forced update can be done, we'll get to that if required. First lets establish what SW version you are at, I remembered something which will tell us and you need no diag tool! :)
First press SETUP and then RETURN and hold both buttons down simultaneously for about 5 seconds until the display changes, then do as per video I've posted.

The USB lead has arrived today as well, so I'll give that a try in the morning to see if it will see a USB stick with music on it.

It maybe an idea to place mp3s on a USB stick and test if AMI function?

Got home tonight and gave the USB lead a go. Had a job finding a track in MP3 as all 2500 albums I have on my server indoors are in Flac! Quickly downloaded two tracks off line, put them on a USB stick and took my new lead to the car. Plugged in and................. success! Played the two tracks straight away and they came up on the screen. You can't seem to use the Bose DSP extra settings on it like you can the CD, but otherwise worked a treat.
Seems very odd now that the unit doesn't seem to like iPods/iPads/iPhones?
I suppose I could buy another hard drive and fit it in the boot with all my albums on. Would probably sound OK like that. A least it would work I would hope.

Good news your AMI works! :fest30:
Perhaps to get the fruit tech to work you need the L cable? again from EPC I viewed L was not dropped as part and replaced by K for the MMI 2 AMI, did VAG dealer shed any light to what cable to use?

I've ordered an 'L' version. Dealer said that K is an updated part to L. However in theory, only for models from 2008 onwards. He admitted that it didn't actually make sense since its an updated part and yet not necessarily compatible, which defeats the object.
I'll post when the lead arrives.
It's just odd that even though t has all of the updates, it can't use the newer lead with an i-anything.
Muppet_man
18-10-2014, 01:52 PM
Received L version of lead, plugged in, worked straight away. However only with an early iPod, since obviously that's what it was for. It's very odd that given its the latest software version, that it won't deal with the later lead. I think I'm going to do as I reported earlier and buy a portable hard drive and put my whole music collection on there in MP3 format. Hopefully that would work.
I also have someone coming round with a VCDS to turn on the eject button for my sat nav, since it has the original disc in it as it wasn't turned on at PDi, so I may just ask him to check that everything is at it should be. I might also ask him to turn on the hidden menu if I can find what settings it needs.
Thanks for all of your help.

Guys, I would like to ask you. I have AMI in my A6 C6.
How to flash AMI with the latest FW, when it just doesnt appear under SW update menu? It is stuck with some kind of strange flash menu loop, it disturbs even my radio (every few seconds, whole radio or CD stops playing for 1 sec, then continues) whole MMi is slowed down and when i try to switch to ami, it shows that it is stuck in some kind of update loop, showing "software being updated, update interrupted" even if there is nothing connected. When I put real AMI flash on USB, it shows incompatible software. I managed to discover that this message shows up because internal SW is too old. BUT with common update CDs 5150 or 5570 its not in the possible flashable units under the flash selection menu... Also I put GND to pin 4 according to web hints with no change... still it shows up in MMI, it shows up in engineering menu, but is missing in flash units-selection menu and also cannot be reached by VAG...
Any idea how to fix this? it is 4E0035785 HW09 SW0170 with SW-Date 15.08.06
and why did this happened?? My car was robbed, AMI stolen, I bought this one from Poland and... here we are :(
