I have had a hand held fault code scanner/live data reader for a while and it will connect intermittently.

During a recent short period that I was able to connect my scanner I got my car remapped with no problems.

Since then I have been unable to connect.

I have recently purchased a VCDS cable and I am only able to connect to some of the controllers that I should be able to.

When testing the cable I get the following:

Port Status: OK
Interface: Found!
Type: Serial Pass-Through
Opto/Iso: No
Ross-Tech Design: No

Latency Test: Poor
2.6 3.0 9.4 (ms)

I can connect to controllers 3, 15, 46 & 56.
I cannot connect to 1, 17, 19 & 25 - for each one I get the message "No Response from Controller!".

K-Line to ground is 4V with ignition off and 11.5 with it turned on.
batt to ground is 12.3V.

The car has the standard radio and CD players fitted.

I have checked all the pins on the obd port and they are all secure.

Looks like a dodgy wire somewhere, any suggestions where to look?

Is it a genuine Ross tech cable? If so which one have you bought?

No its not a genuine Ross-Tech cable. Here's the link to the one I bought off ebay..

VAG GROUP USB COM PORT OBD2 II KKL ECU DIAGNOSTIC CABLE LEAD VCDS-LITE 409 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171175298869?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

Both my scanner and the VCDS cable work fine every time on a Polo 6N2 and a Polo 9N.

It says it only had limited capabilities and only works on certain cars. You need a proper version of the software and a proper cable.

I now have release 12.12.3 of VCDS and a genuine Ross-Tech cable but I still can and cannot communicate with the same modules as previously stated in my original post when using a non-genuine cable. Modules 1 engine, 17 instruments, 19 CAN gateway and 25 immobilizer have no response. ABS, radio, central conv. and airbags all communicate OK.

The port test now reads:

Port Status: OK
USB Library Version: 03.01.19
USB Driver Version: 02.06.01
Interface: Found!
Type: Ross-Tech HEX-USB+CAN
Version: 1.92
Copyright(c) 2011 by Hex Microsystems Pty & Ross-Tech, LLC.
Status: Ready
K1: OK
K2: OK
CAN: Not Ready

And the license says "Valid / Activated"

Any suggestions??

When you start the scan are you letting it scan itself or telling it what car it is? There is a drop down list on the top right, try finding and selecting your car then scanning again?

When I try auto-scan I select "1J - VW Golf/Bora IV 1998 - 2006" and I have also tried selecting the modules individually but neither way works.

I was just reading online about problems with the cluster, so unplugged it, reconnected it again and now I can communicate with all modules! My mpg display is really faint though so looks like a dodgy earth
