View Full Version : Question A6 Reversing Camera - calibration/VCDS help
Hellodave.
29-09-2014, 08:53 PM
I've recently retrofitted the reversing camera to my MY13 Avant, and it works very nicely. However the guide lines are a bit out because the camera isn't calibrated.
I've printed a calibration board and followed the Ross-Tech procedure to calibrate the camera (Audi Q7 (4L) Back-Up Camera - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A8_%284E%29_Back-Up_Camera)) but it fails every time with error 0x0004 "Correction values out of range". I've input what I think are the correct adaptation values for a board on the ground and 1.5m behind the car (500 in channel 4 and 20000-2912-1500=15588 in channel 5).
I think it might be the coding that's at fault - Kufatec's instructions ask you to code the camera controller as an A7 and don't give the value for an A6.
If anyone has an A6 and could post the following info from VCDS that would be really helpful ;)
- Car type (saloon, avant, allroad)
- Back-up cam (address 6C) coding
- Values in adaptation channels 4 and 5 (don't touch channel 1 - setting to 1 and running a test could clear your calibration!)
- Results of measuring block 130 (calibraton status)
My current coding is:

Cant help you with coding. But was it difficult / time consuming to do ? Where did you get the parts ? Where they expensive ?
If you're confident taking trim apart then it's not too difficult, but it is time consuming - I started at 2pm and finished at about midnight! I was taking my time and doing things properly though - you could probably do a rough and ready job in half that time. Some of the trim is a real pig to remove (particularly the tailgate on my Avant) and being German you can't remove trim part A without first removing parts B, C, D and E in the correct order! The service manual is invaluable if you don't want to break anything.
I only used genuine parts so they're not particularly cheap but the result is the same as if the option was factory fitted. I got my kit from here: Audi A7 4G0 Reversing Camera Retrofit | Advanced In-Car Tech (http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/reversing-cameras/audi-a7-4g-reversing-camera-retrofit) plus (to do the job properly) you need a 5A blade fuse and 000 979 135 E and 000 979 009 E repair wires to connect to the fuse box and CAN bus.
You can buy the same kit from Kufatec and if you search there is an English copy of the instructions online to give you an idea of what's involved. However, Kufatec assume you know what you're doing and the instructions miss out some of the most time consuming steps, such as running the video cable from the camera to the controller and from controller to the MMI unit. They also omit to tell you the little but very important steps, e.g. they tell you to add two new pins to the Quadlock connector on the MMI unit, which sounds simple. What they don't tell you is the connector has to be "unlocked" first - easy when you know how but only after I'd spent 10 minutes trying to push a pin into a locked plug!

Interesting thread as Camera is one of the things that I've been thinking of fitting in mine.
When I was looking around in Elsa earlier this week I'm pretty sure that I accidentally came across a section all about calibrating the camera. Have you had a look at that?

I found a section on calibration which tells you how to setup the calibration board but it doesn't help with the adaptation values in the controller - it just tells you to start a wizard in VAS. :-(

Hi. Did you finally get all this sorted? I'm thinking of doing the same in my 2012 S Line saloon with parking system plus.

Not the calibration, no. I even got a calibration board specially printed and it still wouldn't work! However, the camera works fine without calibration and I haven't had any problems with the guidelines being out.

Your coding should be 1020004 or 1020005 according to the ross tech link.

Your coding should be 1020004 or 1020005 according to the ross tech link.
I changed the coding to 1080005 after I wrote that. I can't remember why I changed the 2 to an 8 but I think it was taken from a scan of another C7 A6.
The camera works fine but it still won't calibrate. The official Audi instructions say the car should be empty when you calibrate (which it wasn't) but surely the controller wouldn't check to see if the driver's seat is occupied!
If the coding is correct, the only other thing I can think of is there was too much else in the image near the calibration board when I did it (the garage floor was only about 6 inches away).

Thanks. I wonder if xx8xxxx (as opposed to xx2xxxx) indicates air suspension is installed.

have you looked at this as it gives the camera height measurements
Audi Portal: ECU Diagnostic . Audi Q7 4L (2007- ) . Back-up camera J772 (http://www.audi-portal.com/en/diagnostic/ecu_13006.html#1)
also this post 94

The calibration board has to be within 1.47m to 1.90m from the centre of the rear wheels with boh sides being equal.
the centre of the board has to in line with the centre of the four rings badge.

Hi,
Interested in this thread as i've just bought a 2014 A6 Allroad (C7) 3.0 TDi 245PS model that doesn't have the reverse camera fitted. I ended up buying the same kit as from Advanced In Car Tech as the original poster did. I spoke to Tim at Advanced In Car who was very helpful and even offered to code the system through VCDS once i had it installed. He said he could do it over remote access for me which was a good offer.I was not aware that there was any form of calibration required for the parking lines so this is a new one on me. Tim did say about the coding but not the calibration. I will call him to check this out.
Going to give the install a go myself as confident i can do it. I just need to check that the two repair wires that were bought and used were just in place of soldering instead?
I will post up anything relavent that i discover.

If you haven't already seen it I wrote a full "how to" guide to fitting the reversing camera which is in the diy section. That should cover everything the instructions don't!
You can do the job without repair wires but it's not as neat, and means you can't put the fuse for the camera control unit in the oem fuse box location. Also, officially Audi state that all wires must be crimped, not soldered. Repair wires are only a few pounds from the dealer so worth getting imo.

Excellent! Thanks for the advice with this.

I had my reverse camera installed through A for Audi using your instructions so thanks for posting them.
Me too retrofit the reverse cam in my car, however I'm not really satisfied with the fisheye aspect of the screen. As far as I know, this is the normal view, but I would like to ask you, what do you think, is it possible to change the aspect ratio of the screen? Thanks in advance if you have any clue on this.

Not as far as i know. I've been through the buttons and not noticed anything like aspect ratio.
I'm happy with how it is as it's handy for hooking a trailer on my own.
Thank you for the answer :)
