Hi guys, Bought a Bora 115 tdi 4ys ago after our Almera had a spazmo going up Cheddar Gorge while towing our caravan.(wife had to get out and push).
We went for the Bora after a mate took me for a spin in his Passat 130, very impressed and it tows the caravan brilliantly.
About 18mths ago we had a burning smell coming through the air vents followed by loss of turbo,,,, pulled off the motorway, stopped/restarted the car and turbo returned, but after that, under any stress (ie towing or fast motorway) it would cut out again untill the stop/restart etc.
My mechanic mate found a plastic valve/solenoid had fell onto a hot pipe and melted, so I changed that and cable tied it for good measure. (cant tell you what it was see pic) http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1142&stc=1&d=1190390666 http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1143&stc=1&d=1190390738

All was well except the turbo lost power very quickly, ie come in as normal but gone by 2500rpm like someone was putting the brakes on.
Suggestions were new turbo, ecu or remapping etc, all pricey,, so seeing as things were a bit tight we decided to take things carefully and utilise where the power was, and we got used to it. As I said that was 18mths ago.
Looking at Ebay the other week I saw an Air mass meter for £27 inc postage from Germany, well expecting to pay triple that from VW I went for it.
Arrived and fitted yesterday,,, The turbo now works perfectly BUT I didn't expect the bad misfiring at low revs,,whats going on.
So last night I found VWAUDI forums and went a searching for hours,,,not just my problem but quite a few,, very interesting and very helpful.
A lot of you pointed to faulty new Air mas meters, hey, but mine can't be faulty because it sorted out the turbo issue (but created misfiring).
And then I thought,, if the one I bought made a difference to the turbo boosting properly, then the old one must definately be faulty and also the new one (misfire).
So I took your advise and off to VW I went and bought an original one £62.86 and hey presto no misfire and full turbo boost.
A big thank you from me to a great site,
Many thanks Barry ( ps what was it that melted and caused this in the first place)
