hello.
the timing belt on my car, an audi a6 1995 2.5 . was cut whit a knife am im trying to figure out when this happent.
there is 2 persons that could have done this and person 1 could have done it 12 days ago. person 2 yesterday..
the belt is cut whit a knife angle so 1/3 of the way in on the upper rubber,3 cords are exposed. but only the cord on the side was severed completly.
so what i want an opinion on is if its possible that person 1 did this 12 days ago and ive driven around whit this belt damaged for 20hours++.. i drive foot heavy, alot of downhill i just let the revs take care of.. if that has anything to say about the strain put on the belt.
or is it person 2 that did this yesterday and i should be really really happy i randomly decided to check the engine bay before setting of this morning ?
so what do u think?
thanks for reply
If the belt snaps, you potentially lose your engine.
If you've got the funds to buy a new car/engine, then you can be the world's first damaged timing belt test pilot.
If you've not got the funds, get it replaced yesterday.

ofc i wont drive whit the belt.
but do anyone think its possible that i have driven whit the belt damaged for the last 12 days ?
anyone have anything on this subject ^^
thanks.
If it happened 12 days ago and it's still fine now you've not lost anything and it's lasted 12 days. If it happened yesterday and it's still fine now you've still not lost anything and it's lasted 1 day.
Are you trying to work out when the damage occurred so you can, hopefully, blame person 1 or person 2 and have them repair the belt for you?
Check the colour/condition of the exposed cords - if they're grubby then they've been exposed for longer than 20 hours.

I think your question is impossible to answer.
Maybe yes, maybe no..no definitive way of telling.

the timing belt is hidden under a cover, so you woudn't randomly spot this lifting the bonnet. you would need to remove a cover to see it. the same to cut it, the cover would need to come off. are you certain its the timing belt and not just the fan belt. can you post a photo of it. are you sure its cut and not just been damaged or old and perished.
you have also posted about causing damage to someoenes car, with no proof that they have damaged yours, on the internet. thats traceable and a bit stupid. you might wish to edit your post somewhat. find the facts, and if you still suspect someone, let the police deal with it.

hehe, i dont really care who knows. itz the interwebz.
and i know the diffrence between my fan belt and cam belt. and the cut is knife made.
the belts was changed 20k km ago. so basicly brand new.
i wont bother whit the entire story, lets just say u should be glad that you have never been freinds whit person 2.
im satisfied now that its impossible for me to have driven that car for 20 hours whitout the cords inside rusting and or the belt snapping.
ive talked to alot of guys today.

I don't believe any member of this site would condone vandalism or criminal damage. HTF could someone get into your car to release the bonnet. Do you leave it unlocked? AND rubber and canvas don't rust

and do you really randomly pull back the covers on the timing belt to check the condition of the belt.do you also turn the engine over slowly to check all the belt, as the chances of the damaged bit being in view are quite remote.
in fact, i think you are just full if it and are making the whole thing up , but can't imagine why.

Remember Mike & Bernie Winters? A very unfunny act. Anyway they were doing a show in Scotland one night and one of them went on with the dog. After 5 minutes of "jokes" with no audience response the other one cam on stage and a voice from the back of the hall said "oh ****, there's 2 of them"

If you can see the toothed timing belt from under the bonnet, you need a new timing belt cover, as every Audi I've ever owned has the belt hidden away to protect it from dirt, grease and grime. Persons 1 or 2 would also need to have removed the cover to have cut it.
Unless you mean the serpentine / alternator / fan belt, which is visible from under the bonnet, but breaking/cutting it would be the (albeit fairly major) inconvenience of not having the power steering, air conditioning or battery charging until you replaced it, but not as expensive as new pistons, valves or cams.

I doubt its been cut. Its cracked through age and tension most likely. These belts arent designed to stretch and snap, they will just get dry, crack and then boom. Your lucky you have 1 cord left holding the belt together. Don't drive it, get a new belt. Job done.
You will be most likely causing damage to someone's possession for no reason, I also don't condone criminal damage. Those belts are pretty tough, I would expect if you tried to cut it with any normal knife, it would leave a horrendous frayed mess and dusty evidence under your belt cover. Cracking under tension will generally give a neater break, exactly like breaking an eraser in half. Are we talking a chef knife here or bowie?

hmm.
i got person 2 too admitt it after i sent email to the manufacturer whit picture of the belt and theire engineers said if i started the engine the belt would snap immidiatly. so it had to been cut after i stalled the engine..
and here you go trolls :)
yes i do leave my car unlocked, and person 2 have owned 2 audis c4 so he knew exactly where to go, and yes i do randomly check me engine bay sometimes it just strikes me to do so . and the bit about the chance of the cut being right under the inspection cover is the main reason i belive it was person 2.
and infact, you can think i lie til the sun hits the sky :)
cant understand how you guys can be so touchy,, person 2 tried to kill my car ? eye for an eye, is in the bible eaven !
Is person 2 a friend?
Glad you got it worked out, I've always wondered how Norwegian justice is served :D

you have obviously deeply upset person 2. i just hope you are right and it wasn't person 1 after all, as person 2 may be a bit upset at you if you vandalise his car and may take revenge on you, maybe by setting fire to your car.

I tend to agree that this could well be a bit of a made up story, but why anyone would bother to come on this forum and share it with all and sundry baffles me. And to go online and threaten to do willful damage to someones property is very foolhardy indeed, I'm surprised the forum's management team haven't had 'a quiet word'
However, there is one way for the OP to prove to all of us doubters that the truth is being told. Why not post a photo of the damage. The only other thing I'd add is that to leave a car unlocked is at best a bit silly at worst 'asking for it' All I can say is if I had friends like that I'd pray that I had no enemies!

The OP has been advised by a few members that what he has suggested isn't condoned.
What would you suggest we say? We have no jurisdiction outside of this forum, least of all in Norway.
All that comes to mind is this old meme;

Fair comment 'mycarsavw' not a lot you can do really. But as stated by others, it's very silly to come on a forum (any forum) and make threats. You never know who's watching and reading.
I'd love to see a photo of the damaged TB. Never seen one cut before, it would be interesting to see how they disintergrate.

There's a few forums and social network sites where you can publish your fantasies and delusions and get positive replies from like minded members. Why he choose this site full of middle aged, right wing authoritarians (Mrs Odds words) I cannot fathom

Just off for a drive, but before I go I think I'll check that friend 1 hasn't taken my engine apart and nicked a piston or two. I always leave it unlocked and always check that my Pistons haven't been nicked before I drive it.
Hope this doesn't get me another infraction! :-)

I've heard of pistons breaking, hence piston broke? ;)
But I've never heard of pistons being nicked. I too am off for a drive shortly, I think it may be wise to strip down the autobox before I go just in case one of my 'friends' has swiped some of the parts therein;)

Those are the ones! The light fingered little badge theifs stole most of our company cars (and vans) VW badges Some wern't too bothered if they ripped half the grilles off as well. That was one of the reasons some of us were upgraded to Audi's. I got a Volvo it caught fire in the end and cremated itself :zx11:

Bring the thread back on topic (sort of). I wonder if the OP will ever post up a photo of the damaged TB. In truth I've never seen a failed TB 'in the flesh' and just wonder how exactly they fail. Do they just snap or disintergrate? Sorry for being a bore, it's the nosey retired engineer in me. In a past life I used to have to inspect parts and predict their failure points ect. So that failure could then be engineered out of the picture. (Well, that was the theory)

I often seen them with a tooth or two missing. Even badly cracked ones can still perform. The technology in them is amazing.

Thanks for the photo. So the tooth departing starts the stress process then? That's what it looks like to me. I did see a balancer shaft belt on a Hyundai 2.4 4 cylinder that had lost all of it's teeth but hadn't snapped. The daft thing about that engine is that this small belt is almost hidden under a metal cover. The Mechanic doing the TB change doubted that the belt had ever been changed in over 200K miles of motoring. Respect to the technology I say
Doctle Odd
08-10-2014, 09:19 PM
It's a good idea to take off the cover occasionally and check the belt while turning the engine over with a spanner. On belts over 3 years old do it every month or so.. 1 tooth missing wont make much difference but the belt is weaker where the tooth was and then it's two teeth then three then it slips and bends a few valves.
green A8
08-10-2014, 09:24 PM
Good idea that. My policy is to change all belts at 4 years regardless of mileage. I haven't had one break on me yet on any of our cars. some of the family cars I look after do tiny mileage but better safe than sorry. A few bob for a belt is far better than an engine re-build!
