just had this done on my 2011 A7 while it was being serviced at Wayside Audi, Milton Keynes and i can't say imm impressed. there are some new roads in MK that have been there for around 2 years and yet they are still not on the maps ! i was hoping for bang up to date, i know that this stuff is always a little behind but not this much. is it possible that the update has not come over ? i have checked the software version and it has changed but still wondering. any thoughts ?

Pretty normal for nav updates from Audi unfortunately...bit of a waste of money I'm afraid. You'd expect for the money they charge to be up to date as far as possible...sadly not.

£320 inc labour to install. its amazing when you can buy a complete aftermarket satnav with lifetime mapping for under a £100 now. will manufactures never get with it.

At least they do it for free for three years now (starting MY13 or 14 from memory). I've still got the original maps in my 2011 A7 and it's a very rare occasion I find the roads have changed.

I went somewhere today where the roads were changed 3 years ago and it was not on the 'new' updated mapping. i thought that this is daft, all that money for nothing and then went to my version number for the mapping to check this out online and i have noticed that the numbers are exactly the same as before the update, both the media and map version numbers. surely this is wrong, can somebody please advice me before i have a go at the Audi dealer just in case.

Be good to know the final answer on this one. Have my first free service coming up and was going to ask about update on mine. Current version media is P0532 and maps 5.13.8 Based on what I'm hearing little reason to spend money.

Am guessing that Audi uses the same map data for all their medium dvd/SD/download?

Last set I bought was 2013 and it still doesn't have a through road near me completed in 2007, so I'll not be forking out any more dosh in the remaining life of my C6.

Good to hear it'll be free for 3yrs on MY14 cars, which should mean my 14 A7 will be current when I buy in 17 :)

Hi - I'm assuming you don't have Google maps on your version? If not - can you get it? At £320 (odd) a pop, possibly cheaper & better to just get Rsap working isn't it?

i have been back to the dealer in Milton Keynes, after an hour of investigation they have now told me that the upload / update they carried out last week is on the hard drive of the car but the codes given with the package have not activated the software, so its exactly the same as it was when it went in ! why the hell they could not check this simple matter is beyond me. it now has to go in for 1-2 day again to be sorted out. its a nag update for gods sake ! this is getting tedious

i do have googlr maps but i dont find it that reliable, its ok in a good signal area but absolutely useless when there is no signal and no map for the area in the memory.

Hmm - if my understanding is correct, when you fire up Google maps, it downloads (within reason) your area of influence, routes, favourite locations etc and stores it. It then, updates itself as to what it thinks you need. If you're only travelling locally, then it utilises the data already stored on the hard drive, so it doesn't need any further download to operate. It will update when it needs or when you plot in a new navigation address and so on. As 2g & 3g now cover most of the UK this should prove reliable i'd have thought. I live in the sticks and have to say it fires up and is as up to date as i would expect it to be. The more you use it, the less it downloads, the more up to date your mapping.

most of my time is spend in northern europe, believe me it doesn't work. the screen is totally blank if there is no original mapping and no signal, hence having to do the expensive update.

I have this exact same problem when I updated mine. The maps were uploaded onto the HDD but it took 3 return visits for the update to actually install properly

The system downloads maps for a radius of 200km (if it has time and a signal) and rarely updates them again.

Also remember that the Google Map is just a picture shown over the installed maps. It does not contain any intelligence so it is possible to have a situation where Google Earth is showing a road yet the car has no idea said road exists. To me this made the Google Earth feature pretty useless.

The ONLY way to update the map data that the car uses to navigate is to install the Audi update

em being able to see the road on Google Earth strikes me as a benefit???

But if the sat nav won't/can't route you down it because it doesn't know it exists, unless you already knew the road was there, you would never be on it to see it.

Besides, where as Google Maps tend to be bang up to date, Google Earth images can be as old as 7 years

What versions are you having installed?

I've got MMI 3G+ and what's currently on my car is:
Media version (MMI Firmware): HN+R_EU_AU_K0770
Nav. database version (Navigation Maps): 8R0060884AR ECE 6.15.5

From what I know, I've got the latest MMI firmware available, but there's a new map of:
Nav. database version (Navigation Maps): 8R0060884BK ECE 6.17.3

AFAIK, 6.17.3 actually came out pretty near the beginning of 2014... so I'm waiting for the next one after that to come out before I bother updating mine.

I was very fortunate about this. The dealer ordered in the SD card with the new maps on it, but then realised that they also needed to order in the activation codes. They waited until they had both before they got me to bring the car in :).

This is correct. Google Maps is just showing the pretty satellite photos, and not actually using the Google Maps database.

I'm using a local new housing estate as a guide. Currently looks like Google Earth is 6 months behind reality. Still shows new entrance roads where G Maps has no idea. Re Firmware and Nav versions I guess my question remains is there any killer new feature which is missing from earlier versions.

MMI Firmware 770 added in the ability to use a dashboard SIM for data whilst simultaneously having a Bluetooth phone connected for calls.
Bluetooth Phone and Dashboard Data SIM Card (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?158127-Bluetooth-Phone-and-Dashboard-Data-SIM-Card) . Before MMI Firmware 770, cars built before May 2013 forced you to choose between the dashboard SIM or a Bluetooth phone to use for both Data & Calls (and iPhone users were particularly annoyed as the car would only use a data protocol that the iPhone doesn't support).

Map Updates are just going to depend on whether something near you made it into the update or not.
