I have checked several times the onboard computer and actual consumpton and found the onboard computer accurate. Today on a return journey from York to home (190miles) due to 50mph speed restrictions I managed 72.1 mpg. Thats not bad from a 2ltr engine!:D

Car, 2009 Passat 2.0 TDi Highline 18700 miles on the clock from new.

These sort of threads remind me of a guy I used to work with in the 1970s, who owned an Austin A60 (you'll remember them Vespa!). He was forever rattling on about his fuel consumption that he'd kept a record of from new, and how good it was because he drove very carefully.

One Monday he came into work and started to regale us, as usual, with his motoring adventures over the weekend. He said how he'd been to see his mother-in-law and had got stuck in an almighty traffic jam. 'Blimey, Denis' I said, 'I bet that's knocked your mpg for six'. 'Oh no', he said, 'I'm not going to include that trip.'

The fact that he'd bought an A60 new in the '70s says all you need to know about him....

Apologies to our younger readers, who probably haven't a clue what an A60 is/was.

5TH gear on most roads at 50 mph because of speed limits. Latterly that inc the crap outward trip that saw speeds drop to 35-40mph because of previous hold ups. Yes and I had an A55 Mk2 many years ago. Since then many cars that achieved, incredably a fabulous 15 mpg if you were lucky! I must admit that the last 20 miles I did drive at 55mph and no harsh acceleration to get it over 70 mpg.

It's nice to see a thread complimenting the MPG for a change.

Even nicer to see the reason for it isn't the car but sensible driving.

Goes some way to restoring the balance :approve:

I usually dress just casual but you could always ditch the shoes to save weight - maybe improve on that 72.1 mpg!

Anyway, I used to drive an A60 in 1970 - I can't remember what mpg I got but petrol (4-star leaded) was only about 5 shillings a gallon! (That's around 25p for 4.546 litres for the benefit of any younger readers - good grief that works out at just over 5p a litre! Happy days...).

I had most of that range, A55 Mk2, Wolseley 16/60, Riley 4/72, MG Magnette. Worst for fuel consumption was my Austin 3 Litre at 16 mpg and 22 mpg on the motorways.
By the way I am 19 stone.

And still you got 72.1 mpg in a 2ltr? At that rate I shan't bother chucking out the spare wheel and all the other clutter in the boot - not that I would draw any comparisons with one's weight that is....I'm only 11 stone but I did manage to see my 2ltr Passat nudge just over 70 mpg on the onboard computer the other day.

I think most of those A60s, Austins, Rileys and Wolseleys ended up in banger races - ideal: solid and built like a tank.

I used to banger race a Farina Magnette. Solid, when not full of rust, but narrow track so would roll easily. Mine seemed to spend a lot of time on its roof, and fuel consumption wasn't much good either:D

My Magnette was an 80,000 miler bought off my grandad. I got shut at 120000 miles with no trouble from it. I went on my first Cornish holiday in it to Mevagissey and just befor we came home topped up the dashpots on the carbs and forgot to put the dampers back. It still ran quite well though. The M5 was only as far as Cheltenham then and we used an AA printed route to get there as sat nav was yet to be invented. The M5 was 2 lanes most of the way back in 1972. I swopped that car for a Hillman imp. Yuuuuuuuk!

We're going to get slung off this VW forum! But finally?

Hillman Imp - an excellent British car badly developed and rushed into production.

I owned a Mini in the '60s when my dad bought one of the first off the line. I know it wasn't meant as a direct competitor for the Mini, but initially it really was a class above.

Unfortunately it just went from bad to worse.
