Just had the MOT and the tyres are at the legal limit only been on 12months and where Pirelli p zeros, never really rated them and I'm thinking of trying Avon zz5 just wondering if anyone has these on? And how do you rate them? Or any other recommendations.

I inherited my A6 with Michelin Pilot Sport's on the front (not very old at all) & Conti 3's on the rear.
been very pleased with the front's, especially as it's front wheel drive V6, no grip issues & in the heavy bouts of rain that we have had recently, no hint of aqua planning !!
car's on the 5 spoke 18" wheel.
had dunlop sport max on the old car (lexus) had one go out of shape when only half worn ......

Had the pilot sports on before the p zeros didn't love them either, tyre size is 255-35-19, the lack of confidence might be coming from a 4x4 but thought I would of got used to it by now, with also driving a van most of my time

Just fitted Michelin Primacy 3 to the front and they are first class - better even than the Pilot Sport 3 that I had on another car!!

I had Kumho KU-E39 since October, excellent in the wet also very quiet. Bought them from event tyres

Michelin Pilot Super Sports for me, I've never had a tyres as quiet with such biblical grip in all weathers (although use winters 4 months of the year)
Natch also depends on your budget, driving style and mileage. Michy's seem to have the vote! :)

I had 4 Avons put on the car in May this year(255/35/19) and i think they are pretty good. The car had michelin ps3 previously and was going to replace with the same.Got a good deal at a tyre shop near me for 4 Avons at £700 fitted and a wheel alignment. The one thing that I can tell you for sure is that they are not as noisy as the Michellin Ps3.And on few occasions drove the car a bit harder and these tyres did a good job at keeping me on the road.I remember reading an article on the Internet about the Avons zz5,where they tested these on an S5 in both dry and wet weather conditions and the tyres performed exceptionally well.I don't think you'll be disappointed with them and they are also a bit cheaper than the usuall branded tyres(Michellin,Pirelli,continental...)

Previous bad experience with ZZ3's on my Jaguar XK means I'll steer away (pun intended) from the brand as found them to be a pretty hard compound that didn't wear well for me on that car.
I appreciate that they may well be a different tyre on the A6, but £700 seems an avaerage price and lower can be found if you look and in the less conventional places. For example my Michy's were bought off Ebay £480 for the brand new rubber (still had stickers on them) from someone that had bought them for their Passat only to find that they were the wrong size months later. Plus £50 in fuel collecting them from Manchester (but tied this into a visit there) plus £50 for fitting balancing and alignment meant a total cost of £580. Plus timed it to be when my winter wheels were coming off last March so means I could effectively knock off the £30 I saved in having that done by itself. :biglaugh:
My advice would be to shop around and I'd happily fit partworns that are of good quality, for example my Winters still have 5mm left on them after two winters, brand new would have cost £550 but picked them up for a mere £180. The company import container loads of tyres from Germany where the law means they have to change their tyres at a certain age.

just had kumho's from event tyres fitted to my wife's car - a noticeably quiet tyre.

Actually it's because in Germany the legal minimum tread on a winter is 6mm.

Rainsports for me - they transformed my old Fabia VRS (a remapped TDI one) - so I had them fitted to the A6 to replace the widowmakers fitted previously. I have a mix of 2s and 3s (3s on the back) and haven't found the limit yet even in the wet - I did that very quickly on the previous ones.

I've had ZZ5s on my A6 before and rated them. They lasted well and didn't seem to deteriorate with wear like some brands seem to. I'm now on Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GTs - just because they were a good deal and are rated well on http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk .

Thumbs up here for the Avons.
Have 19's on mine and for the money they are a decent tyre.
Will be putting them on again.

Rainsports for me.
Best tyre I've had fitted on the XK as there's no lift at high speed, however even with XL's I found the sidewalls to be a little fragile with two blown tyres when mounting curbs at low speed on the RS2's.

Yes you are correct and go my facts wrong, that said their loss on 6mm is our gain! :)

Do you guys not mind mixing brands front and rear?
My Pirelli PZ Rosso's are done on the front, yet my rears still have 5mm. Assumed i had to stick with the same tyre so getting more Rosso's put on this weekend for £262.
Happily go for something else if it's an ok thing to do? - rather have something harder wearing as i only do 8k a year of 12 mile commutes, and the Pirelli's don't seem to last long!!

in an ideal world all 4 tyres would be the same, but there is nothing wrong with mixing them up a bit.

I always believed that the better tyres should always go on the rear of the car regardless if FWD or RWD, found this link which supports that view, but am sure there may be others that say t'opposite

yes, some clever people decided that the best tyres should go on the rear to prevent oversteer. now, you are not going to get oversteer unless you either drive a bmw or you are going far too fast. but, you do need to be able to stop, and for this reason the best tyres should always be on the front of a car.

^^^ Zollaf please share a source for this pearl of wisdom for us?
My logic is that fronts (regardless of they type of drive) carry a lot more weight on them (the engine) the rears need to have the most tread as the it's lightest axle. Also understeer (IMO) is much easier to recover from than oversteer when you're not expecting it.

my source is thus. if a child steps out in front of you, or a car pulls out, or you jut need to stop pretty rapidly for any reason, maybe to prevent death or injury, the front tyres do 80 % of the braking, so this is where you need the most grip. yes understeer is more desirable and easier to correct than oversteer, but how many times have you ever encountered oversteer in a front drive car. ( most cars are front drive unless you smoke around in a beemer or ***). most oversteers can be resolved by slowing down or coming off the throttle. understeer in a front drive can be solved easily enough as well, but lock up in the wet, or worse still have the abs pulsing away and a collision imminent that you can do nothing about, can't steer out the way of because there is no tread on your front tyres, and you will soon realise i know where the best place is for those new tyres. oversteer into a ditch and thats your own fault.
oh, and i don't need any expert to clarify my ' pearl of wisdom' , just some driving experience and a logically thinking brain.

OK, so just your opinion? Each to his own :)
Poster I was responding to said they had 5mm on their current rears so not a 'no tread' situation if moved to the fronts, in that case I (and most on-line sources) still recommend newer on rear, which you seem to think is illogical....can't find a single one to support your thinking..although TBH am not looking too hard :D
Last two cars I've had (DB7 & MX-5) were RWD, still have the Jaguar and have never smoked around anywhere.
Hey, but only been driving for 32yrs, so what do I know!? Maybe I just believe everything I read on t'internet :(
Have a great day!

indeed that is my thinking, many people go the other way round, thats upto them. it is the new way of thinking after all, to combat lift off oversteer. but thn do you want to have better brakes or less risk of lift off oversteer.
