Questions from a new owner

Hi all, just got a 1.9tdi Avant and have some questions.....

I have a noise that I can't quite identify. It sounds like a creak and is usually heard when setting off but occasionally when turning. What is the likelihood of it being a broken spring?

Secondly, a high pitch squeal coming from the o/s/f wheel. Any ideas?


And finally, as I used to lightly mod my cars back in the olden days, I want to do the same now. I used to use the carnouisser and demon tweeks catalogues, what do you recommended?

Creaking is likely a ball joint. There are 4 so it may be hard to find which one. As for the squeal, is this constant or when braking?

The squeal is difficult to define as it isn't happening at the moment due to all the rain!

When it does happen, it disappears at about 25mph.

Check for siezed brake calipers.

I'd imagine its a brake that's squealing too. Could be a sticking caliper or might need a bit of copper grease on the back of the pads. Might even be bad quality pads. It shouldn't be too hard to find the culprit.

Tbh, I'm probably going to throw new pads in when I service the car as my Dad always taught me to copper grease the backs and I don't trust the fast fit places to do it.

I'll probably wait till the service and give everything a good tug to see what makes a noise!!

A good tug has been known to solve a lot of problems!!!
