Hi Guys,
Basically im looking to buy a new car and was interested in the Audi A6 2.0 Multitronic saloon. Just wondered on what your opinions are of this car and what to look out for. My budget is around 6-6500. And i would expect around 100k on the clock (lower is of course a bonus)
Im upgrading from a 2005 VW Passat so not too clued up on Audis. Hoping someone here would assist me. Is this model one to stay away from or are they reliable?
Thanks
MarkTM

Your budget may allow anything up to a 2008 model as per below:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201407015453194/sort/pricedesc/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/radius/1501/price-to/7000/transmission/automatic/page/1/make/audi/advert-type/Classified/usedcars/postcode/ta81qd/onesearchad/used/fuel-type/diesel/price-from/6000/model/a6?logcode=p
Search this forum for problems and ensure that the multitronic's had a fluid change every 40k miles as a minimum as HUGE £'s if it goes wrong.
Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes thats sort of the thing im looking for but not an estate and not 140k miles. Ok so first thing on my checklist is multitronic fluid change every 40k :)

I think you need a large cup of coffee and the search button.....
However, as an owner of a 2007 Multi from new having covered 115k miles, here goes.
Cambelt and water pump change at 5 years or 75k miles. Some say 4 years or 60k.
Gearbox fluid changed by Audi or a competent Indy every 40k miles is a must. Walk, no run away if this has not been done or done late.
Check if it has a DPF. Not necessarily a problem but easier without. Do a search to find out how to tell. My 2007 car had one but it was not standard at that point.
This car has the BRE engine and therefore a weak oil pump hex drive shaft. It could fail and cost you between £1K and £2.5k if it takes the turbo and intercooler with it. More if the engine wasn't switched off quickly enough. Prioritise cars that have had this work done over those that have not.
Even though they're an auto, these do have a DMF. My slowly failing starter motor has caused mine to start knocking which will mean replacing both at a cost of £1k.
However, with this and the oil pump having been done I'm hoping to see 200k miles as I don't need another car yet - this one still does everything I need in comfort, style and economy. The engine sounds exactly as it did the day it was delivered over 7 years ago (never a smoothie but very willing) and I still love it. The car still has style in the world of ugly and aggressive 4x4s.
Buy on mechanical condition and history rather than shininess as you can cheaply sort out alloys and paintwork over time. And as this forum show, you can add any gadgets you want which are missing from the spec.
Good luck!

thanks for the detailed reply. so are you saying its better to avoid DPF?
also regarding the BRE engine/ oil pump hex drive issue. What question would i ask a seller? Have the oil pump hex drive been replaced?
Sorry but as you can probably tell. Im a complete noob when it comes to cars, especially Audis. I would hold my hands up and say im after this car purely because i think is looks so good and im unaware of how good/bad it mechanically really is.
Thanks once again

No, they will have a receipt with the cars VIN/REG and recorded mileage at the time the work being undertaken.
if no paperwork to prove don't take their word for it.

I've never had a DPF problem but then I've always used it for mixed town and motorway driving which means that the exhaust regularly gets up to temp to burn off the soot. It's just that if the car has a history of long periods at low speed in town it may not have been given the chance to regenerate.
Some have problems, most don't. If I had a choice between one with and one without I'd go without to be on the safe side. Chances are a 2007 BRE engine won't have one. I think you want one without the code 7GN on the spec sticker in the handbook. But check by searching the forum.

'7GN' signifying no DPF will also be on the sticker at the rear of the boot between spare and battery, in case there's no handbook. 7GG IIRC means it has one.

find a steep hill, put yer foot down, see if it goes into limp mode, if it does it may have egr, turbo issues. if it does , walk away or haggle on the price

On the multitronic you'll not get anywhere near the quoted economy.
Also at that mileage it must have 3 x transmission fluid/filter changes, if it doesn't don't even bother to look at it.
Artizan Road? :biglaugh:

Looks very nice. Wot Mark said 're gearbox fluid changes. Essential.

yes artizan road. you know it :)
hmm i may stick to a manual then. thought the multitronic box would be a good thing but seems more hassle than its worth

Nope, but worth remembering when posting on public forums, if you don't post links properly it says where you live.

Mine has just passed 150k without issue...it's the 2.0 tdie on a 58 plate.
Still feels nice and tight.

ah ok, that a manual or automatic?
what are our thoughts, stay manual or go multitronic?

Mine's a manual...for me at least manual all the way..less to go wrong, better fuel economy and I enjoy driving more with a manual than auto box....I feel I have more control over the car.

Plenty of good reliable examples in 120k+
You just have to find a car that's been cared for with all services done on time (inc the 40k one on multitronics). Any car, regardless of how reliable, will give problems if not looked after :)

Looks good esp since has cambelt and FSH
Ring them up and see what they say when you ask for an appointment to do a test drive and scan with VCDS.
If they're not phased then go for it, a lot of car for the money :D

Am not sure what advice you want, yes it's done 18k miles per annum, but then compare that to the price it would have been new?
Check how many services it's had from new, if 7 then it's been on 'long-life' regime which many feel is too infrequent and needs to be switched back to annual/12k via VCDS.
If it had been a reps car then 18k per annum is quite low, appreciate that it's an ideal motor for eating up motorway miles, if comparing to a Nissan Micra then yes it's high, but it's like comparing apples and pears
I'd also not expect it to have more than 2 previous owners, also if the last owner had for over 2yrs it's far preferable than one where the previous owner had only had for a few months.
Is this the first large used car you've bought?

Well the first Audi yes, im coming from a world of VWs where im a little more familiar with everything.
Its had 5 services, 3 Audi and 2 Non dealer. Its due a service now and has 1 former keeper. The seller said they will MOT and Service and sell for £5700 as a best deal. Tax ends end of next month.
Im hoping to see i on the weekend.

So that work out (in the ne their doing) at a service ever 21k miles!
Even on extended that's some large gaps.
Hope it's still there at the weekend. :)

i bought my audi, 2008 2.0 s line estate 2 1/2 years ago with 130k on the clock,it now has 143k on it, therefore i've clawed the mileage back a bit, only probs i've had were egr valve and leaking rear wiper. runs as sweet as a nut and looks the muts nuts.
i've seen vw taxi's with 440k on the clock. 129k aint that high. Take it for a blast. If mine looks and drives like it does now in 10 years time, then i'll still have it, i love it that much.

As of 1st October you can no longer transfer tax between owners so how much tax remaining will become irrelevant. When you sell the car the DVLA will refund you the unused tax and the new owner will have to re-tax the car as part of the registration process
