Hi all,
Wanted your thoughts on a small niggle that I have with my 98 A4.
The steering wheel has some play in it and wondered if this was typical/acceptable.
Rotationally it is fine, no play at all, but it has play top to bottom and side to side, i.e. if you hold it at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions (or 12 and 6) and push/pull then it moves, not much maybe 1/4 inch but enough to be noticable. If I had to guess I would say that the wheel is held on with a big nut in the centre and it is loose but not sure how the wheel is held onto the column so just guessing really. The problem doesn't appear to be getting worse but sometimes it just bugs me.
I wondered if this is common and should I be worried, Might it be play in the adjuster/lock mechanism or the Universal joints in the column (although UJ play I would have thought I would feel it when the wheel rotates as well but I dont).
Any thoughts?
Stuart
