Hi All. I need a new clutch for my 2002 A4 B5 2.0 Sport saloon. I've asked for a couple of quotes, one of which has come in. Any suggestions as to how much I should be paying, including fitting?

Also, this guy said that there is a 30% chance that I might need to replace the "dual mass flywheel". I don't know what that is, but apparently that would double the cost. Does this sound right?

Thanks

I was quoted six hours work to replace clutch and dual mass flywheel at €40 an hour from an independent mechanic. The piece fly wheel was in the region of €500, that's on a b6 1.9 TDI.

Thanks Modello. I ended up paying c.£600 plus VAT - which included the new clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel kit at c.£350 - so about £250 for Labour. The DMF did need replacing - I had a look at the old one once out. It took more than a day - apparently there was a problem releasing a bolt that was holding the clutch to the chassis. Still, I'm happy with the job. Car drives much better, although I'm driving like a learner at the mo' as I get used to the new biting point.....

Glad to hear you got sorted. Were you getting clutch slip or a vibration/noise before you changed the clutch? And if you heard noise, was it only intermittent? In still contemplating changing the clutch kit, no slip yet but have two different intermittent noises and don't know if both are down to the clutch... I know I'll have to bite the bullet and put a full clutch kit in soon.

It was first raised by Kwik Fit (where I go for tyres, pads and an annual oil change and "service"). One of their guys spotted that the clutch pedal was a little high - higher than the brake pedal - which might mean that the clutch was on the way out. Within literally a couple of weeks, I heard a rattling for about one second when starting the engine after several hours (i.e. in the morning), but not when the engine was warm. I waited a couple of months before sorting it - partly because I flinched at the idea of spending so much on a car that is probably not worth a great deal more than I was going to spend - but mainly because I had to get the rear brake cylinder on my wife's Focus replaced, and that took priority. Plus I was trying to smooth the cash outflow.

By the time I got the work done, I was noticing increasing problems around power transfer - I was putting my foot down and the revs were increasing but the power wasn't going to the wheels. So it was fairly clear the clutch was going. All good now, though.

Good Luck with yours.
