Strange noise from front wheel

Hi all,

I have my 2009 Passat Sport 2.0 170bp a month now and so far everything is going fine,

I got it serviced today and noticed something by accident,

while it was up on the lift I spun the front passenger side wheel & thought that it sounded a bit louder than it should,

I then spun the drivers side which only made the usual noise from the pads & caliper,

my first thought was a bearing but my mechanic dismissed that, he even opened the bung on the gearbox to check the fluid & it looked fresh,

we spun the wheel again and it seems the noise is coming from where the shaft goes into the gearbox,

he played it down and said its nothing to worry about that they all probably make that noise,

now it not a loud noise by any means and its hard to explain but its enough to have me worried!!

Would you class it as a rumble? How many miles has it done?

when you spin one wheel, you are also either spinning the diff or spinning the wheel on the other side through the diff but it will go backwards. so you need to know what the other wheel was doing but i suspect what you were hearing was the diff working.

yep.. the drivers side wheel was going backwards as I spun the left wheel,

which is turning the diff. if in doubt get vw to check it out.

I agree with that. If there is no noise on the road then that will be what you heard.
